Make Your Own Winter Skin Care Remedies

Winter can be the cruelest month when it comes to your skin. Harsh winds, the lack of moisture, and vents blowing out dry, hot air around the clock leaves skin dry, uneven, and prone to breakouts. So when it comes to the products we want to use on our face to fight that, we tend to lean towards natural, chemical-free solutions to help replenish those lost vitamins and minerals. Plus, these can be made in bulk in order to be frozen and kept in ice trays for a quick mask or scrub all year long.

We used the recipes found in this month’s Women’s Health magazine as a base, and made our own personal changes to it. We found that using the scrub first and immediately following with the mask made for some very happy faces.
Winter Skin DIY
Cranberry Face Scrub
  • ¾ cup cornmeal
  • 6 tablespoons freshly crushed cranberries (takes about ½ cup of fresh ones to equal 6 tbsps when crushed)
  • 3 tablespoons unflavored almond milk
  • 6 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

This super-exfoliate removes layers of dead skin to help even out skin tone and prevent breakouts. Cranberries are full of antioxidants, namely ellagic acid, which helps to prevent wrinkles caused by UV rays. Honey and Almond milk both carry natural moisturizers and softeners, for a scrub that will leave your skin soft and happy.

Combine in a medium-sized bowl. Massage onto a freshly cleaned, dampened face and neck for 2-3 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Use once or twice a week.


  • 1¼ cups of canned, mashed pumpkin pulp (should be just about one whole can)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Pumpkin Honey Mask

According to the Women’s Health interviewed dermatologist, Jessica Wu, pumpkin is one of those super-hero vegetables packed with vitamin a, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antifungal compounds. Those are the powers that soothe sensitive skin, redness, rosacea, and even help fight against wrinkles. Honey and coconut oil are natural moisturizers.

Combine the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl until smooth. Apply to freshly washed skin before bed, and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and dry. Skin should feel soft and smoothed, as the mask leaves natural hydrating oils to replenish overnight. Apply weekly or when skin is irritated.
