Whether you’re hosting a formal Thanksgiving, or are gathering friends together for a casual night in, setting the table is essential for any meal–and is a great way to clue your guests to what’s on the menu.
Below is a diagram of a complete table setting. This, while formal, can serve as a go-to guide for all meals. The utensils are to be used from the outside in, and guests will work their way toward the plate–beginning with the salad course, on to the main, and up to dessert. To keep it simple, only set the table with utensils, plates, and glassware that correspond with your menu. If you’re not having soup at your meal, skip the spoon & save on the dishes.
