How to Pumpkin Spice Up Your Space

If you love Halloween, changing leaves, and sipping pumpkin spice lattes, fall is probably your favorite time of year, so make sure you put away those bright pops of summer color and get ready to decorate with crisp, autumnal tones to celebrate the turn of the season. Sweet cinnamon and nutmeg notes in warm, flavorful coffee is our inspiration for designing the perfect pumpkin spice-inspired space, so follow these tips and tricks to make sure your room is ready for the autumn chill. Sip your pumpkin spice latte and feel at peace.

Incorporate industrial and rustic furniture.

In your pumpkin spice space, weathered or reclaimed furniture is the perfect start when decorating for fall. Leave modern furniture behind, and opt for antique-inspired rustic wood and galvanized metal pieces with natural or distressed finishes to convey salvaged sophistication. There’s something comforting about furniture with a past, and the Front Door loves this look for fall since its reminiscent of the homey, simple life in the country and good times with family and friends. Add the Julie Floor Lamp from Furniture Row for rustic lighting in your space.

Add autumnal shades of orange and neutrals.

Nothing reminds us of fall quite like orange does, so don’t forget to use this festive hue in your home. Just like the changing leaves, shades of autumnal oranges will look cozy in your home, and add warmth when paired with sophisticated neutrals like gray, beige, cream, or navy blue. The pinstriped Ascot Accent Chair from Furniture Row pairs beautifully with the Seneca Pillow in copper orange in our pumpkin spice space.

Coziness is key.

The weather gets chillier in the fall, so by adding various textures and layers to your space, you’ll create extra warmth. Cable-knit throw blankets, rugs, faux fur pillows, and curtains are an inviting contrast to the rustic wood and metal furniture and add softness you need to snuggle up and enjoy your pumpkin spice latte. Candles and lanterns for cozy lighting are also important for setting the ambiance.

Harbor the harvest.

Lastly, make sure you make your fall-inspired space festive by adding accents! Nothing says fall like pumpkins, squash, and haystacks. Get creative with a cornucopia of accessories like wicker or rattan baskets, painted pumpkins, plants, flowers, fruit baskets, and foliage prints and pottery to remind your guests of the changing seasons.

Voila! Your pumpkin spice-inspired space is finished. We know you’ll fall in love with this unique style.

Sponsors and Volunteers Sign the Fall 2018 St. Jude Dream Home in Denver

On Wednesday, August 22, 2018, sponsors and volunteers finally got to enter the Fall 2018 St. Jude Dream Home in Denver to sign the garage wall in preparation for the giveaway.

The Dream Home, built by Oakwood Homes and sponsored by Shaw Floors, Trane, Brizo, Bosch, and other building crews and organizations, is still in the last phases of construction, but will soon be fully furnished by Furniture Row and Denver Mattress before the open house tours begin on September 15.

The house, located in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood of the Mile High City, is estimated to be 5,900 square feet and valued at $775,000. It has five spacious bedrooms, three bathrooms, a gorgeous back patio, and so much more.

All the money raised by the home giveaway will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital dedicated to fighting childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Those who purchase tickets or attend the open house are eligible to win the home as well as a $10,000 furniture shopping spree at Furniture Row, $2,500 VISA gift card, 2019 Lincoln MKC, and other amazing prizes.

Julie Hess, the Development Specialist for St. Jude, spoke to the team of volunteers and sponsors at the event alongside other guest speakers who helped make the project a reality.

“I just wanted to thank you guys for all the hard work you put into this beautiful home and into St. Jude. Because of you guys, no family or child will ever receive a bill for treatment, housing, travel, or food. Because of you guys, we have raised the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80% since the doors opened. And then because of you guys, the Denver Dream Home Giveaway has raised 8.6 million dollars. We are very, very lucky to have you,” Hess said.

After the speeches, invitees at the event got a chance to leave their permanent mark on the home they built by signing a wall in the garage with a message to the winner(s) of the house in Green Valley Ranch.

Although the construction team is almost done, the St. Jude Dream Home still has a lot of work left until open house tours start. Barb Chandler, one of the signees and Interior Designer for Furniture Row, will be designing the Fall 2018 St. Jude Dream Home using products from Furniture Row and Denver Mattress. She said she has a lot of ideas in store, but you’ll have to visit the dream home to see how it turns out.

“It’s going to be a bit modern with a touch of glam. The house will feature whites and blues—some grays. More metals. Think Hollywood.”

The project is entering its final design stages, but Chandler emphasizes they still need a lot of helping hands to move furniture, decorate, etc.

“Whenever we do a home like this, it’s not just us [Furniture Row employees] who help. It’s everyone—the neighbors, volunteers in our community, the builder, their suppliers, and so many others who donate their time. It takes a lot of people to make this happen,” Chandler said.

“It’s so heartwarming to be a part of St. Jude because of what they do. We get to change lives. It’s definitely near and dear to all of us.”

Click here to purchase tickets to enter the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway. Each ticket is $100. The open house tours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday from September 15 – October 21, 2018. Tickets must be purchased by October 19 to be eligible to win. The drawing will be on October 25 to announce the winner.

The Fall 2018 St. Jude Dream Home is located in The Enclave at Green Valley Ranch neighborhood at 4950 Liverpool St., Denver, CO 80249.

Interior Designer Christopher Guy Visits The Showroom @Furniture Row

On October 10, 2017, high-end interior designer Christopher Guy made a guest appearance to talk about his inspiration for his new gallery installation at the brand new Showroom @Furniture Row in Denver, Colorado. Guy, who was on his way to High Point Market in High Point, North Carolina for an event on October 14-16, decided to make a special stop in the Mile High City, his newest gallery location after Las Vegas, New York, High Point, and Hollywood.

Only a select number of lucky guests were allowed to attend the exclusive event, where Guy himself talked about his “Mademoiselle” collection, a stunning line of luxurious products inspired by Coco Chanel.

“If she were here today, what would Coco Chanel’s home look like?” he asked the audience Tuesday evening.

Guy said that the “Mademoiselle” line is definitely inspired by the iconic, feminine French fashion designer, but that he also tries to incorporate some masculinity into his collection. According to his own definition of his work, Guy works to assert a clear objective across his products—“to make uniquely beautiful decorative furnishings that appeal to an international audience.

furniture row christopher guy speech

And that’s not hard for Guy, world-traveler that he is.

Living between London, Singapore, New York, and Los Angeles has clearly become inspiring in many ways and has taught Guy to translate his cultural experiences to represent the latest trends from around the globe. Elegance—in Guy’s words—is “an effortless form that is beyond beauty,” and Guy believes that people and places are at the core of his work.

With a large influence from French modernist designers of the 1930s, Guy’s designs are inspired by history. Using his Ovale Dining Chair as an example, Guy emphasized his work by naming the corseted waistlines from Gone with the Wind as the vision for the crisscrossed legs.

“With a dining chair, you tend to look at it from behind, not from the front. So I thought well, ‘Let me design it from the front. And I wanted the tight waistline,” Guy said.

Guy’s work also features up-to-date styles. During the event, Amy Foster, the lead buyer and official spokesperson for The Showroom, asked him where design was going next.

“I think the whole world is moving towards contemporary,” Christopher Guy said.

At his talk, Christopher Guy also signed his “Mademoiselle” catalogue for guests and personally autographed Le Bouquet Mosaic, a piece of art crafted using 17,000 pieces of glass for a customer. The local band Tin Brothers also performed a tasteful music selection while Three Tomatoes catered the event.

Overall, shoppers at The Showroom and fans got to witness a wonderful talk by one of the most renowned interior designers. You don’t get to see that every day!

Get the Look: Tuscan Countryside Style

You don’t have to live near the rolling green hills, olive groves, and vineyards of Italy to feel like you’re inside a terracotta home in the Tuscan countryside. The warmer months of summer are here, and if you don’t get a chance to travel, you can still experience a European retreat without the round-trip airfare. Designing your space to look like an Italian villa might seem like a difficult task, but no matter how big or small your room is, these quick decorating tips can easily transform your home into the charming sanctuary with Tuscan countryside style that you’ve always dreamed of.

Tuscan Countryside Style

GET THE LOOK: Lemon Souk Platter $36, Bellaire Dining Table $1,199, Villa Umbria Framed Art $128, Pendleton Server $449, Hampton 4” Ball $7, Bodega Wine Cabinet $599, Vanilla Cottage Side Chair $79, Kalona Rug $249-$499, Round Shallow Bowl $48-$58, Callie Vase $14-$18

Garner Sun-Washed simplicity

Nothing beats the sun beaming over the picturesque landscape and baking the countryside, so if you want to bring in elements of Italy, don’t forget about the sun! Old Venetian plaster walls, textured wallpaper, aged patina, stucco-inspired, or antique finishes in cream or other light-colored hues, warm-toned wood that showcases the natural grain, and other distressed, sun-drenched-inspired pieces will add rustic antiquity perfect for country styled charm.

Choose Rich Warm Colors

The vibrant shades that radiate from Tuscan countryside style are perfect for creating warmth in your space. Italian decor is abundant with olive greens, terracotta oranges, rustic reds, gold, and sunshine yellow, so bring in these warm hues by adding upholstery, accessories, and other home accents to illustrate the cheerful yet relaxed nature of Italian culture.

Let Nature Inside

Outdoor patios and terraces are popular in Tuscan countryside style, so make sure you keep the windows open and let the fresh air in. Bringing in a vase of flowers, a potted plant, or botanic-inspired accessories will make you feel like you’re living in the warmer Italian climate.

Mimic the Look of Tuscan Architecture

Imitate the look of Old World architecture with stone and wood accents. Tuscan cottages were made to weather the test of time, so add homespun beauty with a classic wooden trestle table, traditional X-back chairs, and other furniture that will always have distinguished appeal. Antique pieces with wrought iron, carved or painted designs will also look lovely.

Get Elegant But Not Excessive

Mix sophisticated touches into your Tuscan countryside-inspired design so that you captivate European grandeur with pretty furnishings that feature decorative textures and patterns. Keep the elegant decor to a minimum, and an intricate pattern or upholstered chair can go a long way in making a graceful statement. A rug with a bright pattern, mirror, or hanging art will look exquisite in your space.

Say ciao to summer with beautiful Tuscan countryside style! You won’t be disappointed in the results.

Ab Workout: Exercises for a Summer-Ready Stomach

Instead, try these easy floor exercises to help strengthen your core and flatten excess tummy fat. Your ab workout has never been so easy! Use a timer to complete each exercise for 50 seconds and rotate for a total ab, lower ab, and oblique workout.

Lower Ab Workouts

  1. Lie flat on your back with your legs extended in front of you.
  2. Place your arms down beside your hips with your palms flat.
  3. As you keep your legs extended, lift them up to a 90°angle.
  4. Lower your legs to hover just above the floor and repeat this cycle.

Scissor Kicks

Increase your lower ab workout with power-pumping scissor kicks. This exercise will definitely get you sweating quickly.

  1. Lie on your back with your legs extended side by side.
  2. Lift your shoulder blades and head and hover your heels slightly above the ground.
  3. Press your lower back into the mat.
  4. Alternate lifting your legs back and forth to create a scissor movement. As your right leg lifts, your left leg falls and vice versa.

Reverse Crunches

To finish your lower ab workout, keep those core muscles active with reverse crunches.

  1. Lie on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Stretch out your arms beside you to support yourself as you lift off.
  2. While keeping your feet together and your legs straight, bring your legs up to a 90° angle.
  3. Keeping your abs active, push feet up toward the ceiling, lifting lower back off the ground.
  4. Lower back down to starting position. Repeat.

  1. Start in a plank position and keep your arms straight beneath your shoulders as you engage your core.
  2. Pull your left knee as close as you can to your right elbow and keep your hips level.
  3. Move your left knee back to starting plank position.
  4. Repeat this movement using your right knee and left elbow.
  5. Continue to alternate sides.

Candle Burning Tips: How to Burn Pillar Candles

If you love to keep a candle burning in your home, but always worry about dripping wax, burning down your candle too fast, or air pollution, you might be doing it wrong! Many people simply light candles and then let them be. Did you know there is a proper way to burn candles to ensure that your candle keeps its original form and levels out evenly as it flickers as well as maintaining a clean burn that doesn’t pollute your indoor air?

Furniture Row now sells the sweet-smelling, pillar-shaped Vela Candles in an assortment of scents and colors, so the Front Door wants to make sure that your candle burning experience is as enjoyable as possible. We consulted an innovative local candle company in Denver called Lola’s Secret Candles to share some expert tips with us on how to get the best burn out of your candle. Read these easy tips to make sure you burn your pillar candle right.

How to Properly Burn a Pillar Candle

  • Do not burn your pillar candle in any glass or container. Use a regular candleholder so that the candle can stand on its own, but still have something underneath it to catch wax drippings or support it in case it gets bumped.
  • Burn it in a level place away from fans, windows, or other drafts in order to keep it burning evenly. If it is placed in drafty conditions, it can begin to burn unevenly or even start to tunnel.
  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each burn. If the wick is too long, it can start to release soot into the air while it burns. Most candlewicks are originally generous in size, but a longer wick doesn’t mean the candle will burn longer.
  • The first time you burn your candle, leave it lit long enough so that a wax pool forms across the majority of the top portion of the candle. This is called a full pool. Let your candle flicker one hour for every inch in diameter, so if your pillar candle has a four-inch diameter, let it burn for four hours when you first light it. This prevents tunneling.
  • Hug in the edges of the pillar candle at the end of each burn by cupping your hands to fold the wax inwards. This will help avoid candle tunneling and allow the excess wax on the edges to be burned along with the center. Tunneling will cause your candle to not last as long.
  • Voila! Your pillar candle will flicker for as long as possible without polluting your indoor air. Enjoy!

Earth Tones and Distressed Finishes

Furniture with distressed finishes that emphasize or mimic the beauty of wood will also remind you of the forest and naturally complement accents in earth tones beautifully.

Reclaimed and Organic Wood

If you’re an outdoorsy spirit, then allow your furniture to reflect that by choosing reclaimed and organic wooden pieces that are not only better for the environment, but also are also elegantly symbolic of the natural world. Unique rustic pieces that showcase not only the wood grain, but also the rough texture of the bark or the natural shape of the tree roots or rings will give your dining room beauty straight from the forest itself.

Items Inspired by Nature

Make sure your accessories also reflect the outdoors by choosing accents you might find outside. Pinecones, tree branches, wicker baskets, and other objects that remind you of plants and animals will add earthy ambiance and make your space one of a kind.

Rustic Appearance

Lastly, be sure that your dining room features on-trend rustic style for a look that everyone loves. Decor and furniture that is not-so-stressful on the eyes will bring peace and balance to your room, and give you and your guests the same relaxation you might experience from being outside—perfect for a dining room. Pieces that reflect rugged, natural beauty and embrace the organic warmth of the outdoors easily match and look quite at home most anywhere. “Furniture Row as a company has family values and does a lot of humanitarian projects, which is very near and dear to what Furniture Row is about. Our company feels like its good to give back. When you first enter the St. Jude Dream Home, the hallway opens instantly to reveal a spacious home office with an adjacent bathroom. Large oversized oval windows allow light to fill the room, while convenient storage pieces such as an oversized cabinet with shelves and sliding doors are perfect for all your books, supplies, and more. Charming Magnolia Home furniture and accessories add rustic farmhouse appeal, and the tree decals on the walls and potted plants in vases and wicker baskets provide the perfect workspace oasis so that you can bring nature indoors.

Living Room

Nothing adds cheer and light to a room like a bright pop of sunny yellow, and that’s what Chandler had in mind when designing the living room of the 2017 St. Jude Dream Home. In fact, she liked it so much she added pale yellow to almost all the rooms.

“I chose yellow because spring has sprung, and I feel like pops of yellow are coming out of winter. Yellow is fresh and fun and that’s why I chose it. I wanted to do yellows and grays and gray is such an on-trend color right now, and I could’ve done all grays but that would be a bit boring, so I felt like the yellow would pop it up a bit,” Chandler said.

To tone down the yellow in the accent pillows and ottoman, Chandler also added neutrals like black and gray that also help modernize the farmhouse look. The stylish black wingback accent chair with nailhead trim is a striking contrast to this light, airy, laidback living room setting and gives the space the dramatic, sleek touch its looking for.

Kitchen and Dining Room

The farmhouse fresh look of Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Home collection is everywhere in the kitchen and dining room, but Chandler also says the space is also modern. A vintage metal linen cabinet holds dainty dishware and a cream farmhouse table gives the room provincial refinement, while the kitchen boasts sleek black cabinets, white marble countertops, and retro metal barstools.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is Chandler’s favorite room in the house, and it’s no surprise!

“I do like the master bedroom because of the window treatments and the amazing bed that’s in there. It’s just really soft and it looks like that’s where you go to relax and unwind at the end of the day. It’s so elegant,” she said.

Soft touches of sunshine yellow in the fabric help add color to the sophisticated bedroom with a cream tufted and upholstered sleigh bed, making the room feel completely elegant.

Basement Living Room

An oversized basement is always a bonus, and there’s just enough room in the St. Jude Dream Home for another living area! Complete with a rustic wooden entertainment wall and a plush brown Italian leather sofa group, the downstairs den is perfect for move nights and casually unwinding.

Basement Recreation Area

Keep your kids’ clutter at bay and give them a space to let their imaginations soar away from the dining table upstairs with their very own workspace area that’s perfect for arts, crafts, and more with a downstairs recreation area! Furniture with lots of drawers such as the Magnolia Home Bin Chest has room for everything you need to stay organized and the industrial Aldo Metal Chairs provide studious comfort you need for playtime and socializing.

Boy’s Bedroom

Two bedrooms occupy the basement, and this large room to the left is just right for a little boy. Rustic wooden bedroom furniture will gorgeously withstand the test of time as your little one grows older and he will love the storage features perfect for games and toys.

Girl’s Bedroom

Feminine and sweet, this downstairs bedroom to the right is pretty enough for a princess. A frilly white bedspread on a sweet white poster bed with a matching vanity looks charming and sophisticated and your little girl will feel like a grown-up with her very own space. Accents in light pink shades are the perfect girly touch, and even mom will want to sink her toes in the pink plush rug!

Outdoor Patio

Walk into an outdoor haven with a versatile and comfortable outdoor patio group that will allow you relax with family and friends when the weather’s nice. For an exotic touch, add Moroccan or tribal-inspired patterned pillows and a bright rug for some summer color. Colorado Springs gets a lot of sunshine, and the patio out back from the dining area is perfect for sipping cocktails, barbecuing, or just kicking up your feet.

Flower Meanings: A Guide to the Perfect Bouquet

There’s nothing better than gifting sweet-smelling flowers to someone you care about, but did you know you could also make the perfect bouquet that sends a catered message for that special someone? Floriography, or the language of flowers, is a method of communication through the arrangement of various types of blossoms. With this easy guide to gorgeous flower meanings, you can create a sweet bouquet for a friend, mother, wife, or anyone else who deserves a personalized gesture of affection.

Flower Meanings Front Door

For a happy occasion, make sure you celebrate with chrysanthemums! Seen as the flower of joy and optimism, the chrysanthemum (also called a mum) comes in a variety of species and colors and is most common in autumn bouquets. Perfect for friendship or well-wishing, a bouquet of chrysanthemums is a gesture of happiness and long life.

Calla Lily

Flowers and Indoor Plants: Fresh-cut flowers or a nice indoor plant will help bring greenery into your home and is a beautiful decoration as the temperature gets warmer. A storage-sized basket is just the right size for a large plant and conveniently has two handles that make it easier to move than a pot. A basket vase filled with your favorite blossoms is also a great way to freshen up a dining or living room.

Springtime Basket in the Kitchen

Fruit and Vegetables: If your produce doesn’t have to be refrigerated, keep it available for hungry guests in a tray basket on the table or kitchen counter, or if your server or kitchen island has room, store a bin-shaped basket below and keep produce in large quantities like potatoes nearby while you’re cooking.

Kitchen Utensils: If your kitchen drawer used for spatulas, stirring spoons, and other cooking utensils is becoming a bit too cluttered, store them in a springtime basket for nearby convenience!

Pantry Items: Label baskets for cans, packaged food, and spices, and you’ll never spend time searching your pantry again.

Springtime Basket in the Living Room

Decoration: Baskets don’t always have to be used for storage. If your mantel or shelves on your home theater wall look a bit bare, a gorgeous basket will look homey and welcoming.

Reading Material: Don’t clutter your coffee table with books and magazines, and instead use a large storage basket to keep beside your favorite reading chair.

Electronics: Remotes and controllers are always finding their way between your couch cushions or underneath your sofa, so designate a springtime basket for them to make sure they never get lost.

Toys: Teach the kids a thing or two about staying clean and clutter-free by labeling baskets for dolls, toys, and other things you might find lying around the house.

Springtime Basket in the Bedroom

Pillows and Blankets: If you have overnight guests or want to take a quick snooze without getting underneath the covers, a storage springtime basket with extra pillows and blankets will keep your room feeling extra snuggly.

Desk Supplies: You’re always running out of desk drawer space, so instead add an overhead shelf with bin-shaped baskets labeled for arts and crafts, important papers and files, or other things you need easy access to while you work.

Springtime Basket in the Bathroom

Toiletries: Keep makeup, cotton balls, Q-tips, and more organized with baskets! Rolls of toilet paper or towels stored inside a large storage basket will ensure your guests know where to find what they need without asking you.

Welcome Home: Elements of the Perfect Entryway

Welcome guests into your home with the perfect entryway! It’s easy to forget about decorating the entrance of your home, so be sure to spend time making sure the space near your front door is as trendy as your living room. Furniture Row has furnishings and accents perfect for creating a variety of unique styles, so think outside the box and start designing your perfect entryway using these inspirational tips.

GET THE LOOK: Red Pagoda ChestMagnolia Home Lotus Black Rug, Facet Table Lamp, Bluebird III Print, Lachlan Accent Chair, Adira MirrorTaj Candleholders, Cole Basket, Blue Seneca Pillow, Hatteras Grey Open Basket

Add an interesting color palette.

If using color in your living room or bedroom intimidates you, try incorporating it into your home entryway instead! Unique wallpaper in various hues or a wall boasting an energetic shade or a soft inviting pastel will enhance the design aesthetic of your space and excite your guests into exploring your home further. If painting the entryway seems too aggressive, you can also choose a large colorful piece of furniture like a sofa table, cabinet, or accent chair to create an eye-catching focus point that your guests will instantly notice and admire.

Bring in pops of your personality.

You want your home to reflect your own unique style, so make sure accessories that represent your personality are in plain sight in your entryway. Knick-knacks, picture frames, and other belongings you hold dear go great on a table, cabinet, or shelves in your home entrance and create a welcoming display.

Get storage for coats and shoes.

The entryway is where your guests will be shuffling in with coats, hats, scarves, and outdoor shoes, so make sure they have room to store these things as soon as they walk in. A hall tree, chest, or storage bins are great for holding clothing items so your home can stay mess free, and you won’t have to worry about dirt or water coming in from the outdoors.

Let the garden in.

If your entryway is smaller in size and you don’t have room for large furniture, a houseplant is a great way to fill an empty corner and welcome guests into your home. Some plants even naturally purify the air, making them not only lovely to look at, but also beneficial to your health. A vase filled with flowers on a side table or cabinet will also add a sweet spruce and make for the perfect finishing touch.

Mix and match styles.

Last but not least, make sure your entryway is one of a kind by expanding your design options. Mix and match two styles for a look that is 100% original when you use the contemporary style from your living room but add bold eclectic accents, or keep the traditional design from the rest of your home, but feature a sophisticated Victorian styled antique sitting chair in your entryway. Whatever you decide to do, know that your entryway is meant for experimenting styles! Make it unique and watch as your guests marvel at your home entrance.

How to Clean Your Mattress for Better Sleep

Spring is here, and although it’s easy to de-clutter your home and start eliminating that winter dust, cleaning for the warmer months isn’t always simple. Some regular use items we never think about cleaning shouldn’t be forgotten! One-third of the average human life is spent sleeping—and that’s a lot of time spent on your mattress! Sweat, dead skin cells, stains, and dust mites accumulate over time in your bed, so make sure that you clean your mattress! Don’t know how? Don’t worry! The Front Door is here to help with these simple solutions to getting your mattress back to feeling fresh and new.

how to clean your mattress

1. Vacuum.

It might seem like common knowledge, but after removing your mattress cover, you’d be surprised at how much pet hair, dust, and sometimes dirt gets caught on the surface over time. Take the vacuum cleaner and just suck all that garbage up to keep the top of your mattress looking clean.

2. Spot clean.

Depending on the type of stain you’re dealing with, the cleaning product you use to spot clean your mattress will differ. Bodily fluid stains such as sweat, blood, and urine are most common mattress stains and can be removed with a combination of water and detergent applied with a spray bottle and rag or a mixture of 1/4 cup lemon juice and 2 tsp. salt that sits for up to an hour.

3. Deodorize.

Get rid of nasty odors with baking soda! Sprinkle a light layer on the surface of your mattress and let it sit for a couple hours. It will absorb sweat smells and leave your mattress smelling clean. When you’re done deodorizing, vacuum the baking soda in order to remove the powder, and voila!

4. Air it out.

Last but not least, clean your mattress by letting it get a little fresh air and sunlight by letting it sit outside! By letting your mattress breathe out, you can eliminate bacteria and give it that new air circulation it needs.

5. Protect your mattress with a cover.

Also be sure to protect your mattress with a mattress cover to ensure that future dirt and stains don’t make their way to your bed. Mattress covers can also easily be put in the washing machine on a regular basis to stay clean and fresh!

How to Level and Hang Art on a Wall

Nothing brightens up a blank wall like a colorful framed print or canvas, so start decorating your space and hang art! Taking a hammer and nails to your wall might be a little intimidating, but avoid the headache of figuring out whether your art is hung straight with these easy tips to making sure that frame looks just right on your wall. Hang art without worry with these simple steps!

For this project, you will need:

Types of Hangers

Depending on what size and how heavy your frame is, the type of hanger you use to hang art may vary. Before hanging, search your wall for a stud (wood support) by knocking on it or by using a stud finder. If you hear a solid sound when you knock, this means that a stud is located behind the wall and that you will have extra support for your frame. For heavier frames, you may want to have a stud and use two or more traditional metal picture hangers depending on the frame size. If you cannot find a stud, a plastic anchor and screw or a butterfly screw are good hanger alternatives.

Let’s Get Started!

1. Using a tape measure, measure the height of your frame and divide that number in half. The height of our frame was 24 inches, so we ended with 12 inches.

2. On the back of your frame, measure from the top frame wire to the top of the frame. We measured 5 inches.

3. Take that distance and subtract it from the half measurement in step 1 (12 – 5 = 7).

4. Typically, eye level height is 60 inches from the ground. Add the number from step 3 to 60 (67 inches). Measure that height from the ground with your tape measure and use a pencil to mark the spot.

5. Hang your frame on the spot you marked using the appropriate hanger(s).

6. Use a leveler to make sure your frame is straight.

7. Enjoy your art on the wall, and make your space your own!

10 Foods to Avoid Before Bed and Healthy Alternatives

It’s late at night and you’re about to go to sleep, but a snack before bed just sounds so good. Studies have proven that munching before bed can cause weight gain and restlessness, but don’t lose hope! Don’t go to bed hungry anymore. The Front Door has compiled a list of the delicious foods to avoid before bed as well as a healthier alternative. Happy snacking!

1. Wine and Alcohol

A glass of red wine before bed might seem like it can help you relax and fall asleep faster, but it actually will prevent your body from experiencing REM. Alcohol can cause you to wake up multiple times throughout the night, so skip the drinking!

Instead: Drink skim milk. Milk contains an amino acid called tryptophan and the hormone melatonin that induce sleep.

2. Coffee and Soda

It’s no surprise that caffeinated drinks are bad before bedtime, and for good reason. Caffeine can stimulate the central nervous system for hours after consumption and leave you wide awake and restless.

Instead: Drink tea. Teas like valerian tea, hop tea, and lemon balm tea act as sedatives that will make you drowsy and calm before drifting off. Tea also helps combat anxiety and reduces levels of sleeping disorders. But stay away from green tea! Green tea can give you an energy boost and make it difficult to lower your heart rate before resting.

3. Ice Cream

Late-night ice cream in bed is always a favorite, but ice cream is loaded with fat, making it one of the top foods to avoid before bed. You’re not going to burn any of it off before you fall asleep and all the excess sugar is going to give you energy.

Instead: Eat cottage cheese or low-fat Greek yogurt for your dairy fix. Cottage cheese is rich in protein that will keep hunger from striking throughout the night while low-fat Greek yogurt is great for settling your stomach and isn’t high in calories.

4. High-Sugar Cereals

A bowl of cereal is an easy meal, but your favorite brands will make your blood sugar spike and crash—making it hard to sleep.

Instead: Don’t skip out on cereal; just choose something healthier. Fortified cereal like granola and brands with whole-grain along with skim milk will satisfy your hunger without being unhealthy.

5. Spicy Foods and Hot Peppers

Spicy food and hot peppers are good for getting your metabolism pumping, but they won’t do much good for helping you fall asleep. Spicy foods can also trigger heartburn and increase body temperature, making it hard to stay asleep.

Instead: Enjoy a bowl of vegetable soup. Vegetables like carrots and cauliflower are full of healthy plant chemicals and low in carbohydrates, making soup a great alternative.

6. Cheeseburger or Steak

You might think a high-protein dinner will keep you full at night, but it can actually lead to sleep disturbances. Heavy meats are one of the main foods to avoid before bed because they can cause you indigestion and acid reflux since you’ll be lying down with a full stomach.

Instead: Eat turkey. Turkey meat is a good source of tryptophan, which makes you sleepy and is a much leaner meat that will be a healthier source of protein before bed.

7. Pretzels and Chips

Skip the salty snacks! Pretzels and chips are full of salt and carbohydrates and the calories won’t be burned off right before bed.

Instead: Snack on sweet potato fries or lightly salted popcorn. These low-calorie snacks will give you your salt fix and fill up your stomach without providing excess carbohydrates.

8. Chocolate

Just like coffee, chocolate contains caffeine that will keep you up at night. Chocolate can increase arousal and decrease your ability to develop and sustain stages of sleep.

Instead: Eat an apple with peanut butter. This delicious snack is nutritious and full of protein that will fill you up before bed and satisfy that sweet tooth craving you have.

9. Fruit Juice

It doesn’t matter what flavor, fruit juice contains a lot of sugars with no fiber to allow for an insulin release. By drinking juice, you might cause your blood sugar to spike during the night or give yourself heartburn due to the acidity.

Instead: Munch on cherries, bananas, or apricots. Natural fruits such as these are full of melatonin that will put you to sleep and contain natural sugars that will digest better in your body.

10. Pasta or Pizza

Pasta and pizza might be one of the most craved nighttime foods, but don’t indulge on Italian, as these are foods to avoid before bed. If you are going to enjoy pasta or pizza, make sure you eat them earlier in the day since they are full of calories, carbohydrates, and saturated fats that your body won’t be able to digest before bed.

Instead: Have a couple of hard-boiled eggs. These are full of protein that will fill you up without a ton of excess calories.

Irish Country Style Just in Time for St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is almost here, so let a little luck inside your home to get ready for spring with Irish country style! The rolling emerald green hills and seaside might not be in your backyard, but you can still bring the quaint, traditional charm of the Irish countryside to your living space with these inspirational design tips straight from the cutaway cliffs of Killarney. Erin go Bragh!

Irish Country Style

Add farmhouse feel.

Nothing says country style more than farmhouse-inspired decor, so make sure you choose all the right accessories with that touch of barnyard bliss. Farm animal motifs will add homespun charm to your kitchen or dining area while farmyard-inspired accents like baskets, pitchers, trays, and metal buckets will look at home on a table or shelf. For furniture, fabrics with organic textures in neutral shades like cream, beige, and brown and wood with distressed finishes in fresh whites and creams will exude countryside simplicity that will make any room naturally beautiful and reminiscent of a quaint Irish cottage.

For farmhouse-inspired accents, check out the: Berkshire Rooster Print, Rustic Handled Tray, Tobian Pitcher, Magnolia Home Tripod End Table, Grandpa Side Table, and Meadow Chairside End Table.

Use classic furniture.

Irish homes don’t need to look overdone in order to appear beautiful, so celebrate the simplistic and quintessential design of a few traditional staple pieces to start your room on the right track to Irish country style. A classic brown leather couch or a traditional wooden dining set will feel homey and withstand the test of time, and make your guests feel right at home.

For classic furniture, check out the: Manchester 5 Pc. Dining Group, Magnolia Home Taper Turned Bench, and Heartland Sofa.

Bring in color.

Don’t forget to go green! Since the country of Ireland is filled with green hills, it only makes sense the Irish love to use this color to decorate in order to symbolize luck, good health, renewal, growth, nature, and harmony. And don’t forget to use other colors too. In defiance of the country’s gray and usually overcast weather, many Irish homes are painted bright colors such as blue, red, and yellow. A red door in Ireland is even said to ward off ghosts and evil spirits! To incorporate color in your Irish country style room, add accent furniture, chairs, and throw pillows to brighten up your space instantly.

For green furniture and accents, check out the: Burlap Trim Pillow, Magnolia Home Flora Side Chair, and Holmes TV Stand.

Choose traditional patterns.

In your Irish country styled room, antique patterns will definitely incorporate the vintage charm found in many Irish homes today. Vintage-inspired floral wallpaper instead of painted walls in addition to traditional European patterns like damask found on rugs, vases, and accent chairs will add visual interest and sophistication in your home. Celtic knots and crosses, shamrocks, and Irish linen made of flax fiber can also bring in the culture of Ireland on tapestries, napkins, tablecloths, and towels, and will make your living space feel extra lucky!

For traditional patterned accent pieces, check out the: Colleen II Accent Chair, Wembley Vase, and Grayson Rug.

Cozy up your kitchen.

Last but not least, make sure your kitchen and dining area are a place for family, friends, and guests. A long farmhouse style dining table and a china cabinet filled with antique dishes on display are frequently found in this nation that is all about good times and merriment. So, celebrate the Irish lifestyle and cherish the ones you hold dear with a good meal and an Irish beer!

For kitchen storage, check out the: Manchester China Cabinet.

Pick Your Personality with Accent Tables

If you’re tired of your living space’s design or have basic furniture that needs a little something extra, you don’t need much to make a fresh, fun new interior design change. The Cecilia Table Lamp boasts a rustic whitewash finished base to complement the cream floral print shade while the white ceramic Tobian Pitcher holds fresh cut flowers for even more beauty. On the Laguna. the natural colored Burlap Trim Pillow is reminiscent of a barnyard burlap sack and the distressed whitewash Wooden Trug also reminds us of the simple life on the farm. Lastly, the chalkboard typography Beautiful and Whole Heart Framed Prints on the wall add the perfect touch of country charm.

Bold Eclectic

Get a boost of color and personality with bold eclectic style! Your walls don’t have to be vibrant in order to get the liveliness of this fun design trend. Summery bright hues mixed with metallic accents will pack a punch in any room and will add attitude to neutral shades and white walls. Accessories should also be fun and whimsical. The less boring, the better!

With the beige Laguna at its side, the bright coral Paige Accent Table is quite the spunky side table. Intricate latticework and a hexagonal prism shape make this accent table unique enough to draw in many admirers. Matching bright hues on the beautiful watercolor-inspired Element Dance Canvas complete the color scheme, while funky gold accents like the Facet Table Lamp and Gold Ikat Pillow introduce metallic shine. For our whimsical accessory, the white ceramic Mama Llama is the unique artifact your guests will adore. Bold eclectic style sure is exciting!

Industrial Chic

Lastly, bring trendsetting design to your home with industrial chic style! Exposed metal in a room is a unique decorating statement that will add edginess and innovativeness to your living space. To incorporate industrial style, make sure the focus in your room is on the materials and structure instead of rich fabrics and bright colors.

To give the Laguna some industrial chic personality, we paired it with the funky metal Inverness Crank Accent Table, a stand-alone conversation starter piece. Light fixtures inspired by inventions past such as the Bell Jar Table Lamp on the Ponderosa Wall Ledge and the Watson Round Accent Lamp on the accent table feature an exposed Edison-style light bulb for added originality. Accessories such as the light blue Tuning Pillow and Washer Hurricane feature geometric patterns for some eye-catching design. On the wall, the Preserved Architecture Canvas boasts the historical image of an antique iron fire escape for the finishing touch.

No matter what style you choose, there’s an accent table for you. Happy decorating!

Survive the Winter: Elements of a Hygge Home

“Home is where the heart is,” is a saying valued by most when they think of their ideal dwelling for their family, friends, and guests, but because of the hustle and bustle of the quick-paced lifestyle popular in the United States, sometimes our living spaces become places for eating and sleeping, while socializing with others happens when you’re out and about. It’s easy to come home and relax after a long day at work, but in recent years the American home has become a place of temporary refuge instead of a place to gather with the ones you hold dear.

The small Scandinavian country of Denmark is frequently named the happiest place in the world, but what’s their secret to staying so content? Some might say the answer lies in the Norwegian word “hygge” [HUE-gah]: the feeling or mood that comes with enjoying life’s simple pleasures, loosely translated as “coziness” and also described as the joy that comes from spending time with the ones you love in a warm atmosphere. The Danes have welcomed the word “hygge” into their culture due to long winter months with up to 17 hours of darkness per day and cold temperatures that encourage people to stay indoors.

The idea of hygge is to relax and to feel as comfortable as possible while letting your worries slip away. Hygge is an attitude, a feeling, an occasion, or a sense of belonging that can’t specifically be translated to English, but according to Danish translator ToveMaren Stakkestad, “Hygge was never meant to be translated—it was meant to be felt.”

So how can incorporate hygge into our homes? Many Scandinavian design trends are currently being adopted into American culture and hygge is being embraced as inspiration for not only interior decorating, but also a new lifestyle choice. The Front Door loves hygge, so here are some tips on how to live cozy like a Dane!

Hygge in the Dining Room

Create a place to gather.

In Denmark, mealtime might go on for hours! Part of experiencing hygge includes dining with close family and friends and carrying on conversation without worrying about the time. Celebrate the good times and share a home-cooked meal, drink, and forget about other places to be. The best company is already at your table.

To create a welcoming dining space, add a long table with room for all your guests like the simple wooden Montego Dining Table and include Scandinavian-inspired wooden folding chairs like the Wegner Accent Chairs to allow your visitors to sit comfortably.

Keep your room toasty.

If the weather outside is frightful, warm up your space with a fireplace! Electric fireplaces are naturally cozy and give your home a hearth, making them perfect for long winter months. In our hygge dining room, the Jakalyn Fireplace keeps the room feeling warm and glass Seeded Hurricanes with candles inside also provide additional flickering glow for even more toasty ambiance.

Use a soft, neutral palette.

When designing a room with hygge in mind, a warm, neutral palette is best so as not to exhaust the eyes with overly bright colors. Lighter hues of gray, beige, terra cotta, tan, orange, and copper look sweet and snuggly by the fireside and introduce a comfortable and warm aesthetic. Soft pastels in pale yellow, pink, or baby blue can also add a hint of color that’s subtle and not overbearing.

In our hygge dining room, the Lotus Mink Rug features an exquisite pattern in mink brown and cream that matches the cozy beige upholstery of the Laguna Accent Chair for a snuggly result.

Stay tidy.

Scandinavian designers love a clean, clutter-free space, so make sure you stay organized. Part of hygge culture is to feel stress-free, so maintain those messes with the proper storage solutions.

In the dining room, a movable cart with drawer and basket storage like the Tuscan Retreat 4 Drawer and 2 Basket Table will allow you to have the essentials close by while other baskets like the Hatteras Low Storage Basket are perfect for holding items you might need such as blankets and reading materials.

Live in the natural world.

If the cold is keeping you inside, stay one with nature and allow reminders of outdoors to make their way into your space. Hygge is firmly rooted to nature, so animal motifs as well as wooden furniture and accessories are popular in Danish households. The Deer in the Mist Canvas features a magical nature scene while the Teak Root Bowl provides an organic centerpiece on the dining table. To incorporate Danish fishing culture, the Weathered Fish is also a nice accent for the mantel.

Hygge in the Living Room

Get cozy.

Nothing says hygge like a warm and snuggly atmosphere! Texture is an important component of interior design in Denmark since the purpose of staying indoors is to keep the temperature toastier than the freezing air outside. It’s hard to feel hygge if you’re cold or are uncomfortable, so make sure you have lots of cozy material at hand such as chunky knit cushions, woolen rugs, velvet curtains, and faux fur throws. Comfy couches like the Ventura Sofa are ideal as soft seating for your guests and chairs like the Denmark Sling Chair that offer lumbar support ensure that you can lay back and relax.

And don’t forget about pillows and throws! Fluffy blankets and accent pillows are key to keeping your room warm. In our hygge living room, the Rattan Braided Trim Trunk is perfect for storing the Faux Fur Throw and Pillow, so that your guests have easy access to extra softness. Even your rug can look cuddly! The Emmie Kay Dove Persimmon Rug features a Scandinavian sweater motif that’s sweet and snuggly and also adds a pop of color with the Kantha Stitch Pillow to complement the gray and beige.

Create ambient lighting.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create a cozy space. Candles are always dimly aglow in Danish homes when the sun sets in the afternoon, and they are certainly hyggeligt! Candles on the windowsill or on a shelf or table create the perfect ambiance in cozy scents like vanilla, spices or cocoa, so add candleholders like the Bastien Candleholders around your living space to keep them prominently on display.

Simple lamps are also great for ambient lighting. Exposed lightbulb lamps like the Bell Jar Table Lamp boast minimalistic Scandinavian design and ceramic lamps like the Charlotte Cream Jar Lamp are classic, cozy accents. Make sure you choose lamps for their purpose and not only their design. You want to choose low-wattage fixtures that stray away from being harsh and overly bright.

Indulge in the simple things.

Less is a whole lot more when it comes to Scandinavian design, and the culture of hygge is all about enjoying the little things in life. To live hyggeligt, indulge in the things that naturally bring you happiness and work to incorporate them into your home. You don’t need to have much in your room in order to achieve hygge, so skip the embellishment and distracting accessories and stick to the basics.

Simple wooden furniture such as the Chevron Cabinet and Pacific Heights II Coffee Table are streamlined and multi-functional for all your activities spent at home, while the Branch Forest Nesting Tables are small, easily movable surface spaces that enable you to create various atmospheres.

Make your space your own.

Part of living hyggeligt also includes making memories with the ones you love! Your home should feel lived in and include reminders of the times when you have felt joy and contentment. Bookshelves like the Del Norte Bookcase are great for keeping knick-knacks, books, and other personal items on display for all your guests to enjoy. Picture frames like the Vintage Wash Frame and simplistic home accents like the Fog Vases are also great for filling shelf space and helping blend the room together.

Spend time lingering.

Last but not least, live hyggeligt by LINGERING. Stick around to enjoy the company of friends and family, or curl up and read a book by the fireplace. The hygge culture wants us to slow down, unwind, and live in the moment. Your home is where the heart is, so make sure you spend some time enjoying it.

Color Wheel Basics: How to Pick Color Schemes for the Home

Decorating your home is no easy feat, and when it comes to choosing paint colors, it can already be hard enough to pick and choose which hues work for you. There are so many different shades, so how it possible to narrow down which ones go great with your furniture and unique design style? The Front Door is here to help! No matter what color you want to start with, there’s a color scheme that will help you figure out that wall color and matching accents to help pull the room together. Stick to this color coordination guide using hues from the color wheel and you can’t go wrong. These are scientifically proven to be eye-catching, so you won’t have to worry about mismatching. Say goodbye to neutrals, and open up your horizons to the world of color!

The Main Color Schemes

It might be a refresher, but before we get started, here’s a recap of the basic color wheel.

The Primary Colors

When you think of the primary colors, memories of learning about red, blue, and yellow from kindergarten come to mind, and you’re not wrong. These are the main hues on the color wheel we need in order to create any other color, so these basic colors are a great foundation for any room. Whether you want to work in a bright red or introduce a calming blue, using a primary color can boost your room’s energy and guarantee that it will be attractive to all.

The Secondary Colors

When we mix two of the primary colors on the color wheel, we get secondary colors. Orange, green, and violet are the next basic colors on the list and they are great for complementing or contrasting the primary colors.

The Tertiary Colors

Last but not least, the tertiary colors are created when we mix secondary and primary colors. There are six tertiary colors that finish the color wheel and create a diverse range of rainbow hues to work with when decorating your home.

Now that you know the basics, take a look at the common color schemes below and design your room like a pro!

For the first color scheme on our list, simply use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They usually match well and create an easy design that looks neat and comforting. Analogous color schemes are harmonious and organically aesthetic since you can find them most often in nature. Choosing three to five analogous colors creates a diverse range in hues that can work from a red-orange to deep violet or from sunny yellow to a calming teal blue. No matter what color you start with, decide which direction you want to go, and there are endless possibilities!

For our analogous room, we started with dark indigo and added hues to get to a vivacious lime green for an eclectic cool-colored scheme! The dark blue Aria 3 Pc. Sectional and Aria Ottoman included patterned accent pillows with various shades of green and blue that matched the Aria Accent Chair, creating an easy start to using this analogous scheme. For other matching accents, we added the Dawn Discovery I and II Canvases and a green Torino Ombre Rug to complete the cool-toned room and painted an accent wall pale blue to create some light balance.

Other items shown: Facet Table Lamp, Facet Accent Lamp, Pass Through Vases
For more analogous color scheme items, add the: Narrow Bottle Vase and Taj Candleholders.

Next on the list, the complementary color scheme simply utilizes pairs of colors which, when combined, cancel each other out to create a blackish or whitish gray since they are exact opposites on the color wheel. The basic complementary color pairings are red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet. Using a complementary color scheme from the color wheel is fun and easy to use in the home to create a natural balance between a cool color and a warm color for some eye-catching results.

For our complementary room, we chose a child’s bedroom to explore the beautiful combination of bright yellow and various shades of violet. The walls are a lovely shade of lilac that is naturally feminine and sweet while the yellow comforter brings out some sunny personality to give the room a little more brightness.

Items shown: Chloe Bedroom Furniture, Harlow Crystal Lamps
For more complementary color scheme items, add the: Beach Princess Kids Twin Comforter Set, Graphic Storage Basket, and Sense Shag Rug (Plum).

To keep your color scheme really simple, how about you just use one hue? Sound scary? It might be, but a monochromatic color scheme can look elegant if you have a lot of pieces in the same color and can’t quite seem to get enough of it. Monochromatic colors are all the colors (shades, tones, and tints) of a single hue that are created by simply adding white, gray, or black to make it lighter or darker.

For our monochromatic room, we used a rich navy blue to decorate a dining room. Beautiful Sapa runners with intricate patterning in denim tones hang regally from the wall adjacent to bold framed blue prints while the same runner drapes the table beneath various blue-toned Oki Candleholders. For the finishing touch, the blue patterned rug exhibits both light and dark shades of navy in an exquisite floral print.

Other items shown: Urban Loft 5 Pc. Dining Group, Urban Loft Server
For more monochromatic color scheme items, add the: Magnolia Home Emmie Kay Navy Rug, Watery Stripe Vase, and Painted Puzzle Canvas.

If you want to spice up a room and prove your color coordinating trendsetter skills, step your design guru skills up a notch with a split-complementary color scheme. The split-complementary color scheme uses a base color of your choice with the two colors adjacent to its complementary hue. This color scheme has the same striking contrast as the regular complementary color scheme, but has less tension.

For our split-complementary room, we used a refreshing teal blue for the base color with its split-complementary hues of mustard yellow and burnt orange. To illuminate the yellow, we also added metallic gold accent pieces for more flair. For the teal blue base, the Eden Settee and Hilton Accent Chair match the Oki Candleholders and Vases prominently on display while the Teal Woods Gold Foil Lacquer Print in the background combines the same teal with the mustard yellow also found on the Seneca Pillow.

The golden Linden Coffee Table and Sofa Table matches the mustard yellow and helps incorporate the metallic shade of the burnt orange found in the Adelle Table Lamp and Facet Ceramic Side Table. For the finishing touch, the rustic orange also beautifully mixes with the teal turquoise on the Rainbow Paper Vase.

Last but not least, you might want to use the triadic color scheme. A triadic color scheme uses colors that are spaced evenly around the color wheel. This color combination tends to be pretty vibrant even if you use unsaturated hues and is great for exploring diverse shades that work great together.

For our triadic room, we used the primary colors for our color scheme! Sophisticated shades of red, yellow, and blue are great for brightening up any space in the home, so we used them in the dining room. The Folk Tile Rug mixes these colors in unsaturated tones in a unique block pattern while blue placemats on the table and red flowers on the fireplace match well with the yellowish wood tone of the Oxford Dining Table.

Items shown: Cottage Side Chairs
For more triadic color scheme items, add the: Vin French Framed Print, Oldsmar Bench, Pierced Lantern Vase (Tomato Red), and Souk Vases.

Trend Alert: Rustic Lodge Living Room

You don’t have to be a ski bum to get the warm, cozy style of a cabin! Long winter months might have you nestled by the fireside reading a good book or watching a movie, so make sure your living room is extra snuggly with one of the Front Door’s favorite new trends—a rustic lodge living room! Whether your home is isolated deep in the woods or in a high-rise apartment, these fun design tips will keep you feeling toasty as the temperature drops.

frontdoor-rustic-lodge-livingBring in the wilderness.

Originating in the mountain cabins of Old World Europe, rustic lodge decorating began in remote areas with the use of native materials from the region. Unfinished branches, logs, animal skins, and unpolished stones became natural building supplies since other materials could not be easily transported, so people began to improvise with what they had.

A rustic lodge interior uses what is natural, so choose pieces with unrefined textures like stone. For the Front Door’s rustic lodge living room, both the New Aspen End Table and the New Aspen 4 Pc. Home Theater Wall feature beautiful stone slate inlay for an organic appearance.

For other ways to bring in the wilderness, accessorize a mantel or empty shelf with objects from outside like pinecones, branches, or fresh evergreen branches, or if you don’t live close to the forest, add a beautiful woven basket or tray like the Rattan Tray that instantly adds natural texture and is perfect for easy storage.

Celebrate the beauty of wood.

The best way to add rustic charm to your living room is by getting woodsy! Since rustic furniture is extremely textural, choosing pieces that show the natural shape and grain of the wood are perfect for lodge-inspired decor. Buying furniture made of wood that is local to your area is also a unique way to bring in an element of the outdoors. In our rustic lodge living room, the Montana Coffee Table features a unique teak tree root base below a simple floating glass tabletop for a look that is raw, earthy, and naturally beautiful.

Accent with animal motifs.

Another fun way to decorate your rustic lodge living room is by incorporating animal motifs. Wild animals such as bears, elk, birds, moose, and deer are common creatures found throughout a rustic room, so be sure to decorate with animal skins, antlers, furs, or other accessories that remind you of these forest friends. To keep our rustic lodge living room animal-friendly, our Faux Fur Throw is a cuddly and soft addition while our Woven Moose is made out of rattan. The Sculpted Horn Table Lamp is also a unique way to incorporate antlers easily while providing cozy lighting.

Add cozy lighting.

Nothing says cabin cozy like some toasty lighting! While fireplaces are a common way to get your desired rustic lodge glow, providing lots of floor and table lamps as well as candles are a simple, fast way to add warm ambiance. Our Hammered Urn Floor Lamp features a textured bronze metal base with a cream lampshade for a homey aesthetic, while the ceramic natural-toned Hina Candleholders will light up a cold night with a cozy flickering glow.

Use textures in a warm palette.

Last but not least, and most importantly, make sure you keep your rustic lodge living room warm! Upholstered furniture can be covered in natural fabrics like cotton, linen, hemp, and wool for an organic aesthetic or materials such as suede and leather in warm tones of brown, burgundy, red, or tan. More traditional furniture is also welcomed with embellishments like fringe and nailhead trim. The Colleen II Accent Chair also fits well with our color scheme with its rustic paisley print and traditional wingback silhouette.

Finally, make sure you keep your toes warm! A thick rug in the same warm tones is the perfect finishing touch. The Mohave Path Rug boasts a unique Nomadic pattern in brick red and brown for some cozy, cultural Native American influence.

Wherever you live, stay cozy this winter with rustic lodge style! It’s the trend that will always offer unbridled beauty.

Electric Fireplace Guide: Gather Around the Hearth

The weather outside might be frightful, but gather around and get delightfully cozy by the fire this winter with an electric fireplace! While wood burning fireplaces smell good, sometimes we just don’t have the time to maintain them. If your home doesn’t feature a vent or chimney, have no fear! With an electric fireplace you don’t need burning logs or smoke ventilation to the outdoors. Electric fireplaces will cut down on dirt and debris and only need a light cleaning to remove dust, ensuring that you have the luxury of a cozy fire without all the work involved. Furniture Row features a wide variety of electric fireplaces to suit your personal tastes and incoming hot trends, so add some more warmth and take home your very own hearth! Check out these helpful tips on how to take care of your electric fireplace.

Play it safe with electricity.

Since this fireplace runs on electricity, make sure you practice the same caution with it as you would with any other electronic device. Here are some electricity tips for your fireplace:

  • Most electric fireplaces require light bulbs that need to be replaced at least every two years or so.
  • Electric fireplaces should be plugged directly into a standard three-prong grounded to earth 120-volt outlet.
  • Since most electric fireplace cords are not very long, you may need to use an extension cord, but it is not recommended unless it’s short and heavy-duty at no less than 1875 watts.
  • Make sure you never plug other electrical items into the same wall outlet as the fireplace. This may cause a circuit breaker trip.
  • Always unplug when not in use!
  • Never use a bad outlet or a damaged cord. Make sure all electrical sources are running efficiently and in prime condition before plugging in your fireplace.
  • Water and electricity don’t mix in certain cases. Keep your electric fireplace out of bathrooms, outdoor areas, laundry rooms, or other spaces where there is water unless stated by the manufacturer that is it safe to do so.

Keep it clean.

Although you don’t have to clean out soot or stoke the burning embers, your electric fireplace will still need a proper wash every now and then.

  • Unplug the fireplace before you clean it!
  • For general cleaning, simply use a soft clean duster. DO NOT use glass cleaners as they contain chemicals that are highly flammable. Warm water with soap is ideal.
  • To remove any dust from the logs, the soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner can be used to clean the grill.
  • Do not use furniture polishes or oils.

Maintain fire safety protocol.

Lastly, make sure you prevent a house fire with regular fire safety procedures! Although your fireplace is electric, accidents do still happen, so make sure your home is safe with these simple steps:

  • Keep a fire extinguisher at the ready, but be sure to buy the right type. Electrical fire extinguishers are different than wood fire extinguishers, so read the label carefully before you buy!
  • Never burn paper or anything else flammable inside the firebox.
  • Keep the air intake or exhaust opening from blockage. Air must move freely at all times.
  • Never store flammable materials near the fireplace such as lighter fluid or paint.
  • Do not have curtains, throw rugs, furniture, or bedding close to fireplace and keep them at a safe distance at least three feet away.
  • The electrical cord or cable should also never be run under a carpet, throw rug, runner, furniture, or any appliances.

Winter is coming, so stay warm and safe this season with your very own electric fireplace. This is a furnishing you won’t want to miss out on. Happy hearth hunting!

Stay Organized with Kitchen Storage

It’s the season for gathering around the table with family and friends, and with all that cooking, your kitchen can become quite a mess. Whether your cooking area is spacious or on the smaller side, you can never have enough counter space or kitchen storage for all your pots and pans, so why not add a piece that does both? Multi-functional furniture in your kitchen or dining room will ensure you’re prepared for dinner and dessert, so take a look at these convenient products from Furniture Row for some inspiration on how to turn your cooking area from cluttered to clean!

You can never have enough shelves.

If your kitchen cabinets are becoming cluttered, invest in a china cabinet! Perfect for your dining area or kitchen, china cabinets or servers that feature shelves are great for storing antique china you wish to display or keep safely hidden, clunky pots and pans, or even boxed or canned food items that don’t seem to fit in your pantry. Extra shelving is the easy way to stay organized, so keep orderly with more kitchen storage options. The Mission II China Cabinet from Furniture Row offers interior shelves behind glass-paneled doors, so your guests can view your beautiful glasses and dishware, and also provides bottom cabinet and drawer storage for items you wish to keep out of sight.

It’s okay to have a junk drawer.

As much as we would like, sometimes we just don’t have time to put back every single stirring spoon, so assign yourself a designated junk drawer! Most experts agree that sometimes a little mess can go a long way in helping you stay sane in a sea of neatly labeled storage. Items that you use often and need to get to quickly are best inside your junk drawer, so pick a place that’s within easy reach! The drawer doesn’t have to be under your kitchen counter either! Island tables that double as counter space and feature bins, baskets, or drawers below like on the the Lake House Counter Height Island Table are ideal for easy access storage.

Mix countertops and tabletops.

Oftentimes more than one cutting board just simply isn’t enough, so make sure you have enough counter space! Tabletops that are made of countertop materials such as granite, marble, or stone slate slabs are a great substitution for cutting boards, hot plate holders, or coasters. Add more multi-purpose surface space with an island table, server, or cabinet that features a luxurious tabletop! For countertop-like tabletops, check out the Cabriolet Stone Top Cabinet that features a high-end blue limestone tabletop, and the Tuscany Cellar Kitchen Island Table that’s topped with a smooth stone slate center.

Enjoy meals on wheels!

Nothing says convenience like mobile furniture! Wheels or casters on the feet of kitchen carts and islands are perfect for transporting ready-made dishes to your guests or carrying wine and utensils so that you can keep people out of the kitchen when they go for a refill or need an extra knife. A compact kitchen cart like the Eaton Kitchen Cart can even be used as additional counter space while larger movable pieces like the Sonoma Slatted Island offers two bottom shelves that will hold anything you need to be easily accessible.

Pamper your guests with fine wine.

Last but not least, every dining occasion needs some festivity! Showcase your impressive vino collection with convenient wine bottle storage that will hold all your reds and whites as well as glasses and drinking accessories. The Tuscan Retreat Wine Storage Cabinet can hold an impressive 52 bottles, leaving room for other kitchen storage with a large glass-paned cabinet, two small drawers, and a bottom cabinet. If your wine collection is a little smaller, you could also add a beautiful server like the rustic barnyard-inspired Belle Manor Server which features two hanging racks for wine glasses as well as room for six bottles.

No matter what the dining occasion, don’t fret. Stay organized with convenient kitchen storage in your home, so you’ll never waste time looking for an oven mitt again!

Get the Look: Gothic Revival

Halloween is almost here, but you don’t need spooky skull decor to stay festive! If you’re a big fan of black, gothic style is a perfect fit for your home, but it’s easy to become a little intimidated by this design trend if your home isn’t styled like a mid-18th century Parisian church. The Front Door is here to help! Add a hint of dark and dramatic romance with these easy steps that will ensure that your living space gets an elegant up-do that’s not gaudy.

What is gothic style?

Forget the association to dark, haunted mansions, vampires, or Wuthering Heights—did you know that gothic style was originally intended to make churches feel a bit brighter? Originated during the middle ages, gothic style began around 1150 AD throughout Europe—specifically in the United Kingdom and France.

Gothic architecture was heavily influenced by vertical design that swept upwards with grandeur in order to solve some of the common architectural problems in medieval times that caused cold, dark, and damp buildings.

Flying buttresses, pointed archways, and vaulted ceilings helped to spread the weight of taller walls and towers and make way for light and airier design than seen previously. Gothic architecture was also decorative and divinely inspired, so gothic interior design also emphasized on the ornate and majestic by incorporating heavy intricate wooden furniture and decorating in rich, dark colors. A lot of inspiration for gothic style came from the Roman Catholic Church that wanted to celebrate their triumph over paganism with beautiful stained glass windows and decor that looked like it was sent straight from the heavens.

Gothic style design tips:

Paint it black (or another dark color).

Nothing says gothic like dark or black finished furniture. The more elaborate, the better! Chairs, headboards, and cabinets made of heavier wood like oak with arches, spiral turned legs, and detailed carvings are a perfect starting point for incorporating gothic style. If black is too bold, gray or dark cherry finished furniture does the trick, or a piece with a nice black-and-white contrast like on the Laslo Hall Console can definitely add dramatic flair. The Otomi Sideboard from Furniture Row is made of solid pine and iron hardware and features a rustic dark coffee finish, making it great for any gothic-inspired room, and the Ebony Jewelry Armoire is elegant with its classic silhouette and chic black finish.

Add heavy fabrics with rich textures and tones.

To achieve the gothic style, use decadent silk, satin, or velvet fabrics with rich and bold colors and patterns for a look that is truly ravishing. The Shimmer Parsons Side Chair features luxurious gray velvet upholstery for some soft sophistication. Romantic jewel tones such as emerald green, deep burgundy, purple, ruby red, or navy blue are dramatic when contrasted with dark or black finished furniture and will give your space a sultry ambiance that looks elegant. Bringing in some color will also allow you to use black sparingly or in moderation, so the room doesn’t feel quite as dark. Thick curtains and drapes on windows and canopy beds in rich textures will also provide a stunning backdrop. Tufted cushions and nailhead trim on otherwise neutral pieces like the Marlena Ottoman and Hampton Loveseat will also add edgy embellishment and glamor to make your room feel even more refined.

Embrace the ornate.

Fancy accent pieces made of wrought iron, metal, and stone are the perfect decorative touch for your gothic revival room! Glittery glimpses of metallic finishes like bronze, gold, and silver will look dramatic on already ornate pieces. The Knottingham Hall Tree features sophisticated wrought iron door decor while the Rosemont Coffee Table boasts a stamped metal tabletop and scrolled iron legs kissed with a touch of bronze for an Old World design. Wrought iron can even look gothic-inspired on lighting like table lamps such as the Chatham Table Lamp or intricately shaped chandeliers.

Enhance with dramatic decor.

Last but not least, make sure you decorate! Gothic style is all about embellishment, so add dramatic flair with elegant objects like mirrors, candelabras, paintings, and dark colored rugs. Our gothic revival room looks romantic with the dark mahogany brushstrokes on the Piano & Music Canvas that goes great with the dramatically elegant red and coffee colored Delphine Rug. For some sparkle, the Roma Candleholders are visually appealing on a table or mantel with their burnt gold finish and smooth silhouette.

It doesn’t have to be intense!

Whether you’re adding one gothic-inspired piece or several, make sure your living space reflects your own tastes and personality. Your unique take on gothic revival will definitely turn heads, and you’ll be the trendsetter you always dreamed of!

Elements of a Cozy Bedroom

The cold weather is finally here, so it’s time to get cozy! Say goodbye to lighter summer bedding and welcome something a bit warmer to keep you feeling toasty. Furniture Row and Denver Mattress have a great line of bedding and bedroom accessories to help create a snug ambiance, so follow these tips for comfortable, cozy bedroom inspiration!

Trap heat with warm bedding.

The first step in creating a cozy bedroom is to stay warm and cozy with bedding designed to keep you warm! Start with a fluffy mattress pad like the Body Cloud Mattress Pad from Denver Mattress for extra plump, so that you’ll feel especially pampered with cozy cotton. Sheets with higher thread counts and tighter weaves will make sure heat stays trapped. For something heavier, try to find sheets like the DreamFit Select World Class Cotton 300 TC Sheets from Denver Mattress that are made of luxurious, soft Pima cotton and have twice the stitching as regular sheets. Finally, choose a comforter set that is uniquely you! Furniture Row has a variety of comforter sets in all colors and sizes, but choosing something versatile can go a long way! The Acanthus Comforter Set is one of our favorites since its neutral palette goes great with an array of styles and is made of warm percale cotton.

Add soft textures everywhere.

Don’t stop at just your bedding! Take the softness one step further with an upholstered bed like the Venice Upholstered Bed from Furniture Row that has chic heather-gray, flannel-like upholstery that is both cozy and classy. And warm up your favorite chair or sofa with a soft blanket like the camel colored Faux Fur Throw that’s a fun furry accent to curl up in and take a nap with.

Bring in warm hues.

Texture isn’t the only remedy for adding snuggle-worthy style to your living space. Warmer hues like bright or burnt oranges, browns, and reds help create a toasty ambiance and are also festive for your cozy bedroom! Accent pillows like the Seneca Pillow and the Bancroft Brick Pillow lighten the mood with bold patterns, but also add lovely oranges and browns to the mix to further complement the comforter set. And don’t forget the floor! Make sure your feet are pampered too with a warm-colored rug like the Torino Ombre Rug that boasts a monochromatic gradient design in brilliant shades of paprika.

Incorporate toasty lighting.

Last but not least, make sure you keep your room looking bright. A well-lit room is always especially cozy when indoors during colder weather, so add a stylish table lamp for the perfect finishing touch. The Adelle Table Lamp from Furniture Row is beautifully crafted with an antiqued bronze finish that brings some extra spice to its already funky textured spherical base.

Don’t let the cold weather bring you down. Stay inside and warm in style this season!

Everything You Need to Know About Furniture Wood

When selecting a new piece of furniture for your home, chances are you’re going to choose something made of wood. Whether it’s a sofa, dining room table, or office desk, your furniture is going to consist of a wooden interior or exterior since wood is everyone’s favorite material—and for good reason. Wood has always played an important role in the history of human civilization. We use it for fuel, houses, paper, tools, and so much more, that sometimes we take it for granted. The demand for furniture wood continues to increase annually, but many consumers of wooden products don’t know enough about the source of their new purchase—trees.

Scientists believe there is an estimated 100,000 species of trees on earth with new species being discovered every year all over the world. So where does your new bookshelf come from? As deforestation becomes more of a problem in our developing world, many people are concerned about the trees. We may never stop needing wood, but we can be more informed about what we buy and the materials used to make it. Choosing furniture that’s right for you will ensure that it stays with you for years, so you can save some trees. Furniture Row sells many wooden products, but don’t be intimidated by the variety! Here is a guide to all furniture wood, so you can take home the piece you’ve been looking for.

Why Choose Wood?

Other building materials such as glass, plastic, and aluminum are easily outlasted by wood! Wood is naturally strong, and many furniture manufacturers take advantage of its durability when designing products. It is easy to care for and offers natural beauty that is a great addition to your living space. With a variety of types and finishes, wood furniture can complement any room design, so you don’t have to worry about mixing and matching. Wood is even gentle on the environment! Compared to plastic manufacturers, wood manufacturers have adapted reliable and improved technologies to minimize waste and energy. Many wood products also contain recycled wood too, so you can choose an item you know is eco-friendly.

Hardwood vs. Softwood: Which is Better?

While many people believe that hardwood lasts longer than softwood, this isn’t necessarily the case. The tree from which the wood originates—not its durability, determines classifying wood as hardwood or softwood. While most hardwoods do tend to be durable and hard as opposed to workable softwoods, there are many exceptions like yew trees, which produce softwood that is hard, and balsa trees, which produce hardwood that is soft. Hardwood derives from angiosperm trees that are deciduous, while softwood derives from gymnosperm trees that are coniferous.

Most hardwoods tend to have a higher density than softwoods, making them more fire-resistant and less malleable. Since deciduous trees tend to have a slower growth rate, hardwood products tend to be more expensive than softwood products, but will last longer. Although hardwood is more common, about 80% of all timber is composed of softwood since it is easier to work with; however, most furniture is made of hardwood due to its longevity and resiliency. Hardwoods are more likely to be found in high-quality furniture, but depending on the tree, a softwood product might prove to be just as long-lasting.

Veneers and Solids: What’s the Difference?

When reading a product description, you might wonder why your new bed is made of two types of wood—for example, rubberwood solids and cherry veneers. What is the difference? A veneer is typically a thin layer of hardwood that’s roughly 1/8 of an inch that is glued or bonded to another surface of wood (solid) that is below it. Sometimes a less expensive or stronger wood is underneath veneer, so that furniture manufacturers can design and build beautiful pieces at a lower cost. Veneer can be stained, painted, or grained to get the exact look you want since it is real wood and offers an extra layer of protection on your furniture. If you are purchasing a piece with cherry veneers, this means that although your new bed is made of mostly rubberwood, it will look and feel like it is made of cherry. If your furniture is only made of solids, it can still be sanded, painted, or treated however you wish, but will only be made of one type of wood.

What is MDF?

Many pieces of furniture might be listed as having a frame made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or plywood, but this does not mean it’s not made out of real wood! MDF features a mixture of wood solids, resin, and wax that’s bonded under a high temperature to produce a wood-like substance that is much cheaper than solid wood. MDF is generally denser than plywood, which is a wooden board consisting of two or more layers of wood veneer that are glued together. Both MDF and plywood are man-made and offer additional structural support in furniture.

Choosing Eco-Friendly Wood Products

You can be environmentally conscious when buying wooden furniture! If refurbishing the wooden furniture you already have isn’t an option, you can still lower your carbon footprint and save trees by choosing the right product. Here are some tips for choosing eco-friendly wood products:

  1. Look for certified wood: When buying new furniture, look for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) that verifies that the piece was built to meet strong environmental and economical performance standards.
  2. Go local: Choose wood that comes from trees that grow in your area and wasn’t transported long distances. Popular trees used in furniture that grow in North America include pine, cherry, oak, birch, poplar, ash, maple, walnut, and certain species of acacia.
  3. Pick wisely: Many species of trees are rare or endangered such as teak and monkey pod, and others take longer to grow and cannot be easily replaced such as certain species of oak, mahogany, and cedar. Instead of choosing these woods, opt for eco-friendly alternatives such as mango wood, which you can read more about here or bamboo wood, another sustainable and hardy material.
  4. Buy reclaimed or recycled wood: Many softwoods such as fir and pine can be recycled, so choose a piece that turns the old into the new! Reclaimed wood also offers antique beauty, and with the perfect distressed paint finish, you can add a dash of vintage chic to your living space. Check out the Chevron Cabinet and the Del Norte Bookcase from Furniture Row for recycled wood examples.

Everyone is familiar with this evergreen tree! Pines are the most commercially important trees since they are fast-growing softwoods that can grow in large masses for timber and wood pulp that’s used to make paper. Pines are also long-living and can typically reach ages of 100-1,000 years if left untouched. Unlike other coniferous trees such as spruce trees, pine trees create durable softwood that is great for building. Pinewood is inexpensive, lightweight, and resists shrinking and swelling. It is typically yellowish or whitish with brown knots, holds paint easily, and wears well over time, making it a great material for rustic pieces. This Christmas tree is certainly capable of creating great furniture!

Did you know? The oldest tree in the world is a bristlecone pine tree in California’s White Mountains. Nicknamed Methuselah after the longest-living man from the Bible, this majestic pine is believed to be 5,000 years old, but you can’t visit it since its location is a Forest Service secret for its protection.

For furniture made of pine, check out the Franklin Cabinet, Durango Panel Bed, and Rustic Craftsman Coffee Table.

Most people enjoy maple trees for their vibrant changing leaves in the fall and sweet syrup, but this Canadian icon does a whole lot more. Apart from furniture, maple wood is the wood of choice for sporting equipment such as baseball bats, bowling pins, and archery bows and is also used to make paper. Dried maple wood is also used for the smoking of food, and its charcoal can be used to make whiskey. As one of the hardest woods, maple is a creamy white hardwood that sometimes has a reddish color and is great for heavy-use items such as cabinets and dressers. Maple is extremely durable. It will still gleam after years of use, and takes dark stains well to produce a rich color similar to cherry and mahogany. It also has a highly decorative rippled wood grain that is 100% unique depending on the tree. The maple is truly majestic!

Did you know? Maple wood is a tonewood, or a wood that carries sound waves well. Since maple is denser than most hardwoods, it creates a bright sound so it is used to make many musical instruments such as violins, cellos, drums, and guitar necks.

For furniture made of maple, check out the Elkhart Nightstand, Elkhart Mirror, and Hayworth Dresser.

Considered as one of the better-known trees, the oak is so popular because it lives on almost every continent! With over 600 different species, the oak can live in forests in temperate or tropical climates. They are fairly large in size and require a large amount of water, so they do not grow very fast. About 78 species of oak are listed as endangered due to habitat destruction, invasive species, and fungal diseases. In addition to furniture, oak wood is used for building ships since it is so durable. It is also used in the manufacture of barrels for storing wine, whiskey, brandy, and other liquors since it adds a special aroma. Oak is a hardwood that is very grainy and comes in two varieties: red oak, which ranges from light brown to reddish with a swirling pattern, or white oak, which is yellowish with a striped grain and flecks. Oak wood is very durable and is resistant to warping. It looks best with a clear finish since it already has a distinctive look and is ideal for traditional wooden furniture such as panel beds and bookshelves.

Did you know? Oak trees produce more than 2,000 acorns every year, but only one in 10,000 acorns will grow into a tree.

For furniture made of oak, check out the Chatham China Cabinet, Cordillera Executive Desk, and Double Axis Bookcase.

The rubber tree is in high-demand, but not just for its wood! Known for producing a milky white sap called latex used to make rubber, the rubber tree is mostly native to tropical regions in Africa and Southeast Asia. After rubber trees reach about 30 years of age, they are harvested since they can no longer produce latex and their wood is used primarily for furniture. Rubberwood is not rubbery; instead it is moderately hard and stiff. It dries rather easily and can be cut to build dining chairs, tabletops, and other paneled products. It is also takes stains well, so you can find rubberwood in a variety of finishes. The natural color of rubberwood ranges from pale cream to yellowish brown and the grain pattern is mostly straight with large vessels.

Did you know? The first use of rubber traces back to 1600 BCE when the Olmecs boiled harvested latex to make a ball for a Mesoamerican ballgame that is still played by indigenous populations today.

Everybody loves this tree’s sweet red fruit! Grown only in temperate climates, the cherry tree is a favorite for its fruit, gorgeous white or pink blossoms, and beautiful wood. Around two million cherries are produced each year, and unlike most fruit trees, the cherry can continue to produce fruit for up to 100 years. Cherry wood is a hardwood with a fine, straight grain that ranges from reddish brown to blond. It can be easily shaped and polishes well. Rich in color, this wood looks best when it’s not stained and darkens with age. Cherry wood tends to be more expensive since the trees are difficult to grow and keep alive because they are susceptible to rotting. For this reason, a lot of furniture features cherry veneers since solid cherry is costly.

Did you know? The Japanese tradition “Hanami” includes viewing cherry trees while they are in bloom. People gather in parks and temples to celebrate the beauty of the blossoms.

For furniture made of cherry, check out the Jameson Dresser, Arches Sofa Table, and Cooperstown Mirror.

This deciduous fast-growing tree grows in temperate climates in the northern hemisphere. Although there’s only 35 species, poplar trees vary a lot in size and color. Since they require a lot of moisture to grow, many poplar trees can be found near rivers, ponds, and swamps. In addition to furniture, poplar wood can be used to make snowboards due to its high elasticity, musical instruments such as guitars and violas, bio-fuel, paper, and is the main ingredient in plywood. Ranging from greenish brown in color with streaks of gray to a pale yellow, poplar is typically straight grained with a fine texture. It has very few knots and is usually used for more industrial and creative purposes since it is inexpensive, workable, and takes nails, screws, glue, and paint finishes well. Poplar is a hardwood but is actually on the softer side.

Did you know? The famous painting, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, was painted on a panel made of poplar wood.

For furniture made of poplar, check out the Pacific Heights II Coffee Table, Soleil Server, and Sullivan Chest.

This tree is famous for its nuts, but it can also create the most intricately carved furniture! People consume 2.5 million tons of walnuts each year with California as the world’s largest exporter. Apart from furniture and its delicious snacks, these trees also produce shells that are used in the production of grit paper, glues, plastics, inks and brown dyes, and cleaning products. Walnut wood is particularly used for decorative furniture such as headboards, ornate antique-style dining tables, and mantels since it’s strong and stable and can handle carving. It is a hardwood with straight grains, and tends to be on the expensive side since it is extremely high-quality. Walnut looks best when clear-coated or oiled to bring out its rich color that ranges from chocolate brown to yellow. This majestic wood really is gorgeous!

Did you know? Walnuts are a rich source of vitamins A, E, K, and minerals such as manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron that can improve blood flow, reduce cholesterol and blood sugar, decrease inflammation, improve kidney and liver function, and heal wounds.

For furniture made of walnut, check out the Savannah TV Stand, Urban Craftsman Chairside End Table, and Belle Dining Table.

Known for its beautiful white bark, the birch tree looks beautiful inside and out! This deciduous fast-growing tree likes temperate climates around the world and can usually be found close to lakes and rivers. The birch is known as a pioneer species since it can grow quickly in environments destroyed by fire. Apart from furniture, the wood, bark, and sap from the birch tree can be used to make tea, soaps and shampoos, herbal medicine, syrup, sugar substitute, canoes, toys, and paper. Birch is a common, moderately expensive hardwood that looks a lot like maple wood. It is light, yellowy brown with close grains and is popular in most furniture. You definitely can’t ever go wrong with birch.

Did you know? The wood of a birch tree is highly flammable. It can catch fire even when it is wet, so it makes great firewood.

For furniture made of birch, check out the Lake House Sever, Oxford Chest, and Lake House Side Chair.

This deciduous tree grows in both cool and warm climates, and produces some gorgeous hardwood. Some ash trees are in danger of extinction however, due to the emerald ash borer, a wood-boring beetle that kills trees in North America, so it is important to make sure the ash wood in your furniture does not come from an endangered species. Woodworkers enjoy this hardwood since it is strong, bendy, and easy to work with. It is used for a number of things including firewood, smoking meat, and sporting equipment such as baseball bats, hockey sticks, and canoe paddles. Ash veneers are also popular in the manufacture of office furniture. The wood of an ash is typically very tough, course textured, and features straight grains. Ash varies in color from creamy white or gray to light and dark brown. It is moderately priced and commonly found in bent furniture pieces requiring maximum strength such as tables.

Did you know? Ash trees are commonly found in mythology and folklore that spans back thousands of years. The Vikings even worshipped it as sacred.

For furniture made of ash, check out the Riverbend 4 Pc. Home Theater Wall, Bellaire Dining Table, and Tulip End Table.

Seeing an acacia tree probably reminds of you of an African savannah, and you’re not wrong! This shrub or deciduous tree needs a lot of sun and loves dry habitats. Although it doesn’t grow very tall or live long, the acacia plays a vital role in the Australian and African ecosystem since its leaves are an important source of food for camels, goats, cattle, and giraffes. Since acacia wood is very strong and durable, it used in the manufacture of toys, jewelry, and tools. Tannins isolated from the tree sap are also used to tan leather and acacia flowers are also boiled down to make perfume, cosmetics, herbal medicine, and liquor. Unlike other hardwoods, acacia is very water-resistant, so it is ideal for heavy-use items that come into contact with liquids. It comes in a variety of deep browns and its attractive, natural grains look handsome with the rich color. This exotic wood is truly one-of-a-kind!

Did you know? Stinging ants live inside swollen-thorn acacias in Africa. The acacia provides shelter and nectar to the ants, and in return they protect the tree from herbivores.

For furniture made of acacia, check out the Arcadia Server, Madagascar Bench, and River Ridge Media Chest.

Trend Alert: Indian Summer

With the cool drop in temperature, you might be tempted to make room for fall decorations, but don’t let go of summer just yet! Indian summer is a period of unusually dry, warm weather occurring in late autumn, and with this temporary heat wave you can have fun mixing bright summer colors that pop when matched with rustic fall decor. Check out Furniture Row’s take on this eclectic new trend with these fun tips to create your own Indian summer styled room.

Add rustic and reclaimed.

Nothing will remind you of spending cozy fall in the woods quite like rustic and reclaimed furniture. Distressed wood pieces such as tables and cabinets add an organic aesthetic that brings nature directly into your home. Let the natural wood grain show its true colors with pieces like the Nantucket Server made of reclaimed Indian hardwoods that is sealed for luster to maintain the authentic paint residue on the wood. Take tree-loving design one step further with a unique table like the Montana Coffee Table that’s crafted of exposed teak roots supporting a sleek glass top. Stay rooted in Mother Nature, and let the forest inside!

Mix bold patterns and textures.

Incorporate the Indians’ love for intricate and colorfully detailed patterns with soft textures on room accents like rugs and chairs. Summery blues such as the dyed and luxurious denim colored Marbella Rug look great when paired with bold patterns in earthier autumn tones found on pieces like the Evelyn Accent Chair that boasts a mosaic-inspired print in red, brown, and beige. Just like the seasonal twist in temperature, don’t be afraid to mix the opposites for a look that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

Incorporate soft seating.

We all love curling up by the fireside to watch a movie or read a good book during the fall, so make sure your living space is full of soft places to sit! Sofas in warm neutral tones like the saddle brown Denver Loveseat look cozy with fluffy pillows, cushions, or blankets that match your color scheme like the green Escape Pouf. An extra amount of fluff can go a long way!

Bring in a pop of color.

Last but not least, liven up your Indian summer room with a bright pop of color on room accessories like lamps and art! Beautiful shades of turquoise are reminiscent of summer skies and look great with fall tones of red and orange. Furniture Row’s Tivoli Table Lamp adds a beautiful tint of blue for some cozy lighting. And nothing says Indian Summer like feathers! The Wind Song Canvas is the perfect finishing touch with bright watercolor painted feathers in orange, pink, and blue. Don’t say goodbye to color this fall!

Behind the Scenes at Denver Mattress

Denver Mattress is considered unique among its competitors in the bedding industry, but how does it earn its success? From its factories, managers, and workers, Denver Mattress has been titled with having one of the most efficient mattress assembly lines in the world, but there’s a lot of work that goes into making sure they’re consistent in terms of quality. Karen Goossens, the National E-Commerce Manager from Furniture Row, sat down with the Front Door to answer questions about what goes on behind the scenes at this unique company.

Front Door: How does Denver Mattress produce consistent body support and enable a restful night’s sleep with minimal interruptions?

Karen Goossens: Everybody has different comfort and support needs in a mattress. What sets Denver Mattress apart is that we truly care about helping you find the mattress that fits you best. We offer a variety of different support systems, from zoned support, which offers extra support where you need it most, to individually wrapped coil and foam support systems, which provide excellent motion separation for couples. We even carry adjustable air chamber systems for truly customizable support.

FD: What does Denver Mattress do to ensure quality over time?

KG: Being a factory direct company, Denver Mattress takes a lot of pride in the quality of the mattresses we produce. The fact that we make the mattresses ourselves gives us control of the components that go into them and we use the highest quality materials we can for every price point; for example, all of the foams that we use are CertiPUR-US® certified to ensure quality.

Also, during design and development, Denver Mattress uses tests that simulate how the mattresses will perform through time with actual use. They are then measured and inspected for wear to ensure quality. The mattresses must perform well in testing before they will ever make it to a showroom for a customer to purchase.

FD: How does Denver Mattress minimize waste while producing mattresses?

KG: We like to use the term up-cycle instead of recycle because we are repurposing all virgin materials. Our M.A.R.S (Materials Automated Recapture System) takes all of the excess fabric trimmings and creates a new fiber that can be used to make pillows, mattress pads, etc. We also recycle all plastics and cardboard which makes the factory a zero waste facility.

FD: Where does Denver Mattress find inspiration for new mattress technology?

KG: I think the biggest source of inspiration is listening to our customers. We are able to see what types of mattresses they are looking for and also look for gaps in products that are available. In addition to that, Bob Rensink, who runs our factory, stays on top of all of the latest mattress technologies that are available, so he is constantly coming up with new ideas to try.

FD: Take us behind the scenes in the factory. What kinds of manufacturing procedures do the products experience before they hit stores?

KG: Denver Mattress utilizes J.I.T. (Just In Time) manufacturing. Because mattresses are produced on demand, little to no inventory is stored in the factory. The raw materials are assembled together into a mattress and then immediately sealed in plastic and loaded for distribution to our stores. The entire process ensures consistent quality and very efficient production.

FD: What’s one fun fact about mattresses you think people should know before making a purchase?

KG: You always hear about the fact that you spend 1/3 of your life in bed. However, think about the impact your sleep has on the other 2/3 of your life. Sleep has such a dramatic impact on your health; it ranks right up there in importance with diet and exercise.

FD: Do you have any additional thoughts or comments?

KG: The main thought I would like for people to know is that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to a mattress. You need to find the support that fits your body and lifestyle the best. Our complimentary custom mattress fittings will help you find the mattress and pillow combination that your body needs to put you in neutral spinal alignment. This helps your muscles relax and minimizes pressure points on your body, so you can get a better night’s rest.

How to Create the Perfect Space to Watch Football

Football season is upon us, and it’s time prepare for the big game! If you don’t have season tickets, but still want to support your favorite team, your living or family room is your go-to party space for guests to gather around and watch that winning touchdown, so it needs to be ready! While your entertainment room might seem small or not very guest-friendly, here are some simple tips to make any space the perfect place for large crowds and celebrations.

Comfortable seating is key.

Finding the perfect amount of plush to plop into as you click the remote is definitely the first thing you need to focus on when creating your ideal space to watch football. Kick back and unwind in a comfortable recliner for you or your guests that features foam cushioning and easy-to-clean, breathable fabric in a neutral color that won’t highlight stains such as gray, black, or brown. Many recliners also feature center consoles with USB ports and stainless steel cup-holders so your guests won’t have to fight over wall outlets or leave a drink lying on the floor. Keep it casual and choose a couch set or sectional that’s versatile and goes well with anything. The more seats, the better, so incorporate many chairs, beanbags, or side chairs, so that everyone has a place to sit and be comfy! Ottomans are also great seats and sometimes feature convenient storage that’s great for hiding belongings you don’t want in the way. Pieces in your team’s colors are always a great way to show team spirit without being too flashy, so don’t be afraid to add an accent chair in a bold hue that’ll get your crowd excited about game time.

For comfortable seating, check out the Big Sur Reclining Loveseat, Vero Beach ChairBellamy Sofa, and the Bellamy Ottoman.

Go big or go home.

Without your television, there is no party, so make sure everyone can see it! No matter what size your TV is, there’s a stand or entertainment wall that will accommodate it perfectly. Smaller televisions look great on a simple stand with electronic storage underneath, but if you’ve got a great big screen with surround sound, show it off by placing it inside a home theater wall that has ample amounts of storage for cords, remotes, speakers, and other media accessories. Your TV should be ready for that touchdown!

For an entertainment theater, check out the Oslo 5 Pc. Home Theater Wall.

Get more surface space.

If everyone has chips and soda, they’re going to need a place to set it down! Nobody wants to eat off the floor or risk ruining your lovely sofa by snacking too close to the couch. Placing a slice of pizza on your glass-top coffee table or nearby end table is a whole lot better than figuring out how to get rid of tomato sauce stains out of your ottoman. Keep the clutter at bay with more tabletops! Small tables such as sofa tables, end tables, and coffee tables with shelves underneath are perfect for adding surface space without being too bulky and wooden pieces with marble, glass, or stone tops are a great substitution if you run out of coasters or koozies.

For small sides tables, check out the Paladin Sofa Table, Trends Chairside End Table, and the Unity Rectangular Coffee Table.

Clean and simple goes a long way.

Just like your couch, you want furniture with fabric that can withstand a few spills since accidents do happen. The floor is definitely going to take a bit of a beating, so don’t stress everyone out about ruining your lovely all-white shag rug! Rugs that are made of wool or other durable, heavier materials in neutral tones are perfect for a little wear and tear and will keep your beautiful hardwood floors happy! Flat rugs that are easy to vacuum are also great for cleaning up crumbs.

For a good game day rug, check out the Torino Ombre Rug.

Keep the excess to a minimum.

As much as you want to decorate your living space with art and home accessories that will impress your friends and family, breakable things should be kept at bay from the rowdy fans! Instead, opt for soft things like accent pillows or throw blankets that are perfect for adding your team colors and making the room more comfortable. Floor lamps that can hide in corners are also great as opposed to breakable table lamps that can be easily knocked over. A canvas is also a fun way to personalize your wall without taking up floor or table space. Pick out a print of your favorite team or choose an image of your team’s mascot, for even more team spirit.

For accessories with team spirit, check out the Mustang Run Canvas, Nickel Arc Floor Lamp, Cable Knit Pillow, and the Tweed Pillow.

Bring on the food and drinks!

Last but not least, get ready for the food and drinks! All your game day guests will want to eat chicken wings with their beer if it’s available, so prepare by incorporating trays or coolers nearby so your kitchen or dining room doesn’t get crowded. A kitchen cart is also a great way to store drinks and eating utensils that can stay out of the way until needed. They also make for a unique piece of furniture! Don’t stress about spills or space, let there be food!

For food-and-drink ready furniture and accessories, check out the Eaton Kitchen Cart and the Profile Trays.

No matter what team you pull for, there’s a way to get your crowd going wild! Win or lose, your party-ready entertainment space will certainly be a success when you know what to expect!

Best Mattress for Each Sleeper Position

We all have those mornings. We wake up, roll out of bed, and think, Wow—why am I in so much pain? As we grab coffee and head out the door to work, we shrug it off. I must just be tired. Probably didn’t get enough sleep. This is the norm, so we have another cup of coffee or even pop a few painkillers hoping that by the time lunchtime comes, the back or neck pain will be gone.

Sure, there are those restless nights when you stayed up too late or simply had too much on your mind, but if you’re going to bed at a decent hour, you probably shouldn’t be experiencing soreness or pain. It’s not the norm.

According to the American Psychological Association, a study conducted in 2013 said that 43% of American adults said that they would feel better with more sleep—a number that is higher than the 32% who felt that way back in 1993. Many scientists associate this increase with stress—people work later hours than they did two decades ago—but 92% of Americans in 2011 believe that this is not the underlying problem—it’s their mattress.

Obviously a mattress that’s too old should be replaced, but what about one you just bought? You wouldn’t go mountain climbing without the right equipment, so who’s to say sleeping is any different? Sleeping comfortably at least seven hours a night is vital to improving memory and concentration, losing weight, living longer, and being happier and healthier. In fact, sleep is the best way to heal any problem you might have.

Your body is 100% unique and so are your sleeping habits. Finding the right mattress for you can sometimes feel like looking for a needle in a haystack, but it doesn’t have to be difficult! Starting with identifying your sleep position can help you narrow down the best options for a new mattress. With this guide and these products from Denver Mattress, you can definitely find your new dream bed so you’ll never wake up sore again!

Back Sleepers

If you’re someone who doesn’t like to get fancy with your sleep position, you keep it simple by sleeping on your back. After all, shouldn’t that be the best? You keep your spine straight that way. While sleeping on your back does have its benefits, the guidelines for selecting a mattress that’s perfect for this position are broad. Back sleepers don’t have a set comfort range, so for you, the opportunities are endless—within reason! Whether you prefer a firm or a soft mattress, your mattress needs to provide excellent lower back support since the lack of an arch can lead to soreness. Mattresses with memory foam, latex, and pillow tops are ideal for molding to your back, so that you don’t get misaligned. However, having a mattress that’s too padded won’t keep your back from sinking, so you want to choose something that also has a healthy amount of support. The coil or other core support system in your mattress should keep your back somewhat flat so that you don’t overdo it with cushions! Check out the Aspen® Plush and the Doctor’s Choice® Firm from Denver Mattress for a mattress with great coil support.

Stomach Sleepers

Although this is the least common of the three basic sleep positions, some people prefer to sleep on their stomach. Many sleep problems can arise from this position in particular, so it is really important to make sure you choose the right mattress so you don’t cause your body any serious injury. Proper support for your back although you’re sleeping on your belly is extremely important, so you want to select a bed that’s not too soft and does not allow your pelvis to sink down and result in the misalignment of your spine. At the same time, choosing a mattress that’s too firm will keep your body too flat and not allow it to shape into its natural curve. Stomach sleepers can experience a nagging and reoccurring pain if their mattress does not feature at least medium firmness. Mattresses with tops that feature pressure-relieving memory foam or innersprings are ideal for stomach sleepers so that they don’t bend all out of shape. Check out the TEMPUR-Contour™ Elite Mattress and the Doctor’s Choice® Elite Firm from Denver Mattress for a mattress with medium firmness.

Side Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, you’re not alone! As the most common of the sleep position types, side sleepers would rather stray away from sleeping too rigidly on their stomach or back, so they curl up into a fetal position or hug their pillow tight. While side sleepers are less likely to suffer from snoring or airflow issues, they can still experience hip, back, or neck pain if their mattress is too firm. If you sleep on your side, you should opt for a softer bed—one that will definitely contour to the curves of your body. A mattress with softer support will relieve pressure points and keep your neck, spine, and back in alignment. Plusher mattresses with features such as memory foam, pillow tops, and Euro-Tops with innersprings offer many advantages to side sleepers. If you sleep on your side, you get to make your bed super soft! Check out the Doctor’s Choice® Euro Top and the TEMPUR-Cloud® Elite for a mattress that relieves pressure points.

Whatever position you sleep in, there’s a mattress for you! Invest in a bed that won’t leave you sore in the morning! It’s time snooze peacefully again.

The Engineer

Forget the humanities! You’d rather spend your hours calculating the answer to a long math problem or taking the time to conduct an experiment. You base your projects on analytical thinking and consider yourself a problem-solver. When you put your mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t figure out! If your career is in science or math, you probably want a workspace that’s just as logical as you. Your office should be filled with research books, electronics, and other gadgets you might need to get your brain juice flowing with lots of notepads at easy reach to write down your next big idea. Use the sciences themselves for decoration! Items you might find in a lab or are reflective of famous leaps in scientific history will definitely serve as inspiration and motivation while you work from home.

Tip for the Engineer: When decorating your home office, comfy and organized is key. If you’re spending long nights poring over research notes or writing lab reports, you should have a supportive desk chair and lots of options for storage. Keep your desk drawers organized with tab file folders and use bookshelves to keep your reference collection off your desk surface until you need it.

The Trendsetter

If there’s someone with a self-starting, can-do attitude—it’s you! Not only are you fashion-forward, you might actually be your own boss. Your friends might ask you for career advice because you’re constantly setting the stage for success. You’re totally on top of the latest trends and earth-moving ideas, and it only makes sense that you’re a bit of an entrepreneur. When decorating your home office remember that the bigger and bolder the better, so let that fierce charisma be reflected in your workspace! Find the latest trends in interior design and incorporate them into your home office. Add a desk with personality that strays away from your average wooden executive desk. An office chair in a bright color will make an eye-catching statement, so pair it with eclectic wall art to match. Even your light fixtures should be conversation starters! Let your upbeat nature shine—go big and go home!

Tip for the Trendsetter: Although you want to have the latest and greatest, make sure your workspace is still multi-functional! You never know what your next endeavor might be, so choose furniture that allows you to be ready for creative action. When decorating your home office, make the time to find a plush office chair that will have you feeling comfortable and confident, no matter what assignment you’ve got next. Be sure you’ve got all the essentials.

The Businessman

You’re the polished image of professionalism. Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and that’s why you’re the hardest worker of them all. Being a CEO or a person with major responsibility in a role involving leadership is expected to always be on top of things, but don’t worry you have 100% got it covered 24/7. Even though you’re off-hours, when duty calls, you’re definitely everyone’s go-to guy or gal. Whether it’s quickly responding to an urgent email or taking an important business phone call, your home workspace needs to be your office away from your actual office. You need to be able to count on it like people count on you! Appearance definitely matters, so when decorating your home office, make sure your home desk is as polished and professional as the one you’ve got in your high-rise office. Sleek and clean are easy solutions for high-stress assignments, so be sure to incorporate neat shelving, neutral colors, and nothing that distracts you from the job that needs to get done. Your phone and computer should be easy to reach, and make sure you always have a supply of pens at hand!

Tip for the Businessman: Although you just want your home office to be a place to get work done, you can still showcase your personality and interests since it’s your own home! Black and white are safe professional choices for decorating, but don’t be afraid to mix it up with a funky rug or an interesting lamp. Nothing too crazy, but just enough fun to make your office a bit more unique than the one you go to everyday.

The Fashionista

No matter what your career is, you’re definitely all about keeping up with appearances. You don’t mind a little limelight; in fact, getting others to notice your stylish appearance is what motivates you to work harder to accomplish your dreams. You might be quite the stargazer in terms of your career potential, but for good reason—all eyes are on you anyway! Your chic attitude is definitely glamorous enough for anything you put your mind to, and you don’t shy away from letting yourself feel fancy. A little frivolousness never hurt anybody! Bring your sophisticated sense of style to your home office so that you can continue to feel elegant while you work. Incorporate shiny metallic pieces for a little more sparkle, and have fun mixing patterns and textures for a cohesive look that attracts your many admirers. You can’t go wrong with crisp, classic white, or items that have a little antique glam. Make sure your workspace is neat and exquisite. It should simply shine like the star you are!

Tip for the Fashionista: It might be hard to say no to all your favorite trendy items, but you should make sure all your furniture matches! Too much glam can be gaudy, so tone down the fashionable faux-fur and gold with neutrals and pieces made of wood. When decorating your home office, you want to make sure the space is pretty but still professional.

The Old-School Soul

Trendy and modern are great, but you prefer the classics. Your friends might think you’re a little old-fashioned, but they know they can always go to you for wisdom and guidance. As a bit of an introvert, you thrive in a quieter setting at work and at home. It’s not strange to find you holed up in your favorite chair reading a good book with a cup of coffee. Since your career probably involves a lot of thinking, a room with a cozy atmosphere is key for you to spend your days and nights getting work done in an orderly fashion. Warm hues and vintage wooden pieces are essential for someone a bit more studious. A room filled with bookshelves, reading lamps, and comfy places to sit is definitely your dream office. After all it is your home—it should feel like it!

Tip for the Old-School Soul: To create a cozier atmosphere, make sure you have lots of fabric! Whether it’s a cashmere blanket or a plush ottoman, the key to creating the ultimate reader’s nook is to keep it feeling warm. Curl up in a corner with a good book on a chair that’s so soft, you could take an afternoon nap in it.

The Artist

As a true right-brain person, it’s no wonder that you have a career in the arts. You feel like the luckiest person in the world because your job encourages you to think outside of the box. Whether it’s painting, writing, or designing, you absolutely love what you do and you’re always thinking of ways to be even more creative when it comes to your passion. It’s no surprise that your style itself is colorful and possibly a little eccentric. You love to create things, so there’s no doubt that you’ll want a workspace that helps those ideas flourish. Each item in your home office should be inspiring to you, so that you can brainstorm. Fill your drawers and shelves with art utensils and knick-knacks that make you happy. A big canvas with bright colors or a bulletin board is a great way to add some personality and help you express yourself. Your desk and office chair should be newfangled and fun. Even your lamp should be a little whimsical! For the Artist, the design ideas are truly endless—you should be proud!

Tip for the Artist: It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the next big project and forget where you put that list of things to do! The more surface and storage space, the better, so make sure your desk and your shelves contain bins and files that are neatly labeled so you can easily access anything you need last-minute. Artists tend to have a lot more mess that comes with creating, so be sure to de-clutter every now and then.

Lakewood Design Studio: Gina Carpenter’s Summer Picks

*Program available in select locations only.

Decorating your home for the warm summer months doesn’t have to be difficult! Furniture Row makes it easy by offering complimentary design services and will help you choose your favorite summer picks for furniture, decor, and more. The interior designers at each store’s location are helping customers find exciting new ways to customize, personalize, and stylize their homes using texture, contrast, color, and pattern.

Gina Carpenter, a Design Studio Designer at the Furniture Row of Lakewood, Colorado is here to offer her expertise to the Front Door on how to create your dream home. Here are some of her tips and top summer picks for decorating your home!

Front Door: How do you describe your signature design style?

Gina Carpenter: I would describe my style as transitional. That means I enjoy mixing traditional and modern styles. When you do this, you end up with a room or style that stands the test of time. I like to use neutral colors on larger pieces such as a sofa or chairs. This gives you a clean and classic palette to build on. Splash a fantastic color on the walls, bring in an amazing rug and some textural pillows, and layer on a few unexpected accessories, then you will see that you have a room that is comfortable and classic.

FD: Where do you draw the most inspiration for summer decor?

GC: Summer decor should be inspired by the outdoors! Bring summer inside! The warm weather is a great time for hiking, gardening, and vacationing. Next time you are on a hike, look around for items you can take home. For instance, gather pinecones or cool stones to put in bowl on your coffee table. Growing your own flowers assures you will always have fresh flowers for your bedside table. Gathering seashells at the beach is fun and looks wonderful in a clear glass jar on your bathroom vanity.

FD: What color, pattern, or texture do you find yourself turning to again and again? Why are you drawn to them?

GC: I am always drawn to tribal and Tibetan rugs. They come in a variety of colors, but usually they consist of vibrant hues and graphic patterns. You can use them in almost any home—modern, mid-century—they look great anywhere!

FD: What element of a room do you recommend staring with and why?

GC: I like starting with an area rug since it sets the tone and color palette of the room. I like to think of it as starting from the ground and working your way up. It is much easier to find fabrics and paint colors that match your rug than finding a rug that matches your paint and fabrics.

FD: Do you have any projects you would like to share with the Front Door?

GC: I just finished a couple of projects that turned out really well. My clients are extremely happy with them and were kind enough to let me photograph them.

FD: Do you see any trends transitioning into fall?

GC: The trends that I see are metallic gold and burnished brass, warm gray, mixing of old and new, and outdoor living.

Metallic Gold and Burnished Brass

The burnished gold and brass trend has definitely been growing in the last few years, and I think we will see an explosion of gold and brass hardware and accessories. If you have been hesitant to embrace this new trend, you should definitely jump on board!

Warm Gray

Grays will stay popular, but we will see warmer, earthy tones introduced for fall and winter.

Mixing of Old and New

It’s the trend that keeps on going! Mixing reclaimed and vintage with new and modern furniture will continue to be a hot look. Being able to mix grandma’s antique buffet with your new sleek dining table makes us feel connected to our interior spaces, and feel great about recycling old items.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor furniture is one of the largest growing markets in interior design and there is no stopping it! We now have outdoor living rooms and kitchens with amazing finishes, textures, and durability. Who doesn’t like eating al fresco or taking a Sunday snooze on your outdoor sectional?

FD: Anything else we should know about you?

GC: I am the luckiest person! I have a job that I look forward to every day. I think embracing good design is so important for our personal health. Your home is, in a way, a sacred space—a place you go to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, so I feel honored every time an individual or family invites me into their space. I have the best job in the world!

Off to College Dorm Must-Haves: How to Go Back to School in Style

Dorm life might not be quite so glamorous with ramen noodles and microwavable dinners, but as your not-so-little-one heads off to start the best four years of their life, you’ll want to make sure that Room B302 looks as cozy as your home living room. Although you can’t fit much, there are a lot of dorm must-haves that every freshman needs to make their sleep and study space the most comfortable it can be! Furniture Row has the essentials and more, so use this checklist to make sure your college kid’s got everything they need and read our fun tips on how to make any dorm look cool enough for school.

You can never have too much storage.

I think when I was in college I brought my entire seashell collection—which was like thirty shells. Did I need to bring the entire east coast with me? Of course not, but when a teen is leaving home for the first time, they’ll want to make sure everything they might miss is right there with them—even if it’s the Atlantic Ocean. So if there’s nothing they want to part with, make sure there’s room for it! Whether it’s a bin, basket, container, trunk, or cabinet, your college student can never have enough storage for all of their things. When a room is small, leaving things lying around can make it get smaller real fast, so make sure everything can be put away and organized for the next time it’s needed. For a stylish way to save closet space, add Furniture Row’s Galvanized Trolley (13) or Explorer Rectangle Coffee Table (11).

Less is more.

Since there’s not a lot of space to work with, make sure everything your incoming freshman brings is trendy yet practical. Instead of a bulky bookshelf, opt for under-bed storage. Instead of a couch, opt for a lighter futon. Depending on the space, you may have the opportunity to incorporate the sizable furniture you want, but make it a rational and functional alternative. The best dorm must-haves you can bring are multi-purpose. Pieces such as Furniture Row’s Stacking Stool (10) can be used as a seat, a mini-table, or a stepping stool and the Texter Office Chair (7) is so comfy it can be used for studying, eating, or lounging around with friends. And don’t forget the everyday staple items! For a late night of studying, the Tivoli Table Lamp (9) is perfect for a college student to use to study while his or her roommate sleeps or simply to brighten up the desk.

Soft and cozy goes a long way.

After a long day in a lecture hall or pulling an all-nighter, your student’s bed will be his or her new best friend, so make sure that awful dorm mattress has some extra fluff on it. Add dorm must-haves like Furniture Row’s Essentials Mattress Pad and Denver MattressSlumber Fresh Pillow to soften up your teen’s slumber and make sure their bed is feeling fresh with a cozy comforter like the Teal Angles Comforter Set (5) that covers crisp sheets found in the Essentials Sheet Set. And while they’re lounging, make sure they have a blanket to keep them warm while they study for midterms. Add a throw blanket like the Cable Knit Throw (3) that’s great for snuggling up to watch Netflix or taking a much-needed afternoon nap.

Be prepared to have guests.

Parties are fun, but when your teen and his or her friends just want to order pizza in, make sure there’s room for them too! A light yet comfortable futon is every college student’s reliable go-to bed for visitors, so bring furniture like the Port Augusta Futon (2) that is space-saving and goes with anything! For a soft reading or lounging chair, a cute and practical accent chair is small enough to fit in tight corners and is light enough to easily maneuver around the room. Furniture Row’s Grayson Accent Chair (12) brings color and contemporary style to any dorm room so that all visitors will have somewhere to sit!

Let personality shine.

Last but not least, make sure your student has fun decorating his or her new room! After all, it will be their home away from home so make sure it feels like somewhere they feel comfortable. Bring some of their much-loved possessions from home, but add cute and colorful accents to help showcase their personality and be conversation starters. Wall art doesn’t take up any floor space and brightens a room, so incorporate cool prints like the Let’s Run Away Framed Print (6) or add pictures of  friends and family in cool Vintage Wash Frames (4) to a desk. Bold and funky vases like the Tuka Vases (8) are also a great way to add decoration and are perfect for storing pens, pencils, and other office items that are needed. You can also take patterning fun to your furniture with accent pillows like the Honeycomb Pillow (1) that are a great way to mix and match the colors in the dorm room.

No matter what kind of dorm your new college kid has, there’s a way to make it feel like home. Their first college year is almost here, so it’s time to start packing all of their new dorm must-haves! Make sure they have everything they need, but be sure to have fun creating a brand new room. Don’t fear small spaces! Room B302 might seem drab at first, but you can still start the school year in style.

Enjoy the complete list of dorm must-haves with the following dorm room checklist:

Get the Look: Outdoor Living Room

Summer is here, and since we want to spend most of our time socializing outdoors in the warm air and sunshine, it’s important to create an outdoor living room where you can do just that! Whether it’s for a patio or inside a screened porch, outdoor furniture is the best way to make your home as livable outside as it is inside. Back in May, the 2016 St. Jude’s Colorado Springs Dream Home was revealed with an awesome outdoor patio fully furnished by Furniture Row in this article, so here are some of the ways you can match the laid-back, breezy style our designers chose!

Outdoor Living Room

Outdoor Living Room Furniture

Just like your indoor living room, your outdoor living room should include comfortable furniture! Just because patio furniture is meant to withstand the elements, it doesn’t mean you should sacrifice plush seat cushions and good quality construction. The Brookstone collection used in the 2016 St. Jude’s Colorado Springs Dream Home features versatile cream-colored olefin seat and back cushions that resist fading, mildew, and staining. The open-cell foam cushions are quick drying and provide comfortable support atop virgin resin woven wicker, powder-coated for all kinds of weather. Similar to indoor furniture, when creating your outdoor living room, choose a matching set that features a sofa, chairs, and a loveseat that provide an endless amount of seating for your guests as they lounge. Tables like the Brookstone Coffee Table and the Brookstone End Table can also be incorporated into the mix and are perfect for holding drinks, reading materials, and other outdoor living essentials. The casual Brookstone collection is a great example of breezy furniture you will enjoy having when you need a breath of fresh air!

Outdoor Living Room Foliage

Even if trees don’t surround your home, you can still bring nature to your patio or porch by adding potted plants or flowers that will help create your own personalized Garden of Eden. Incorporate vases and pots on outdoor tables adjacent to a sofa or chair so that you get a little more greenery as you relax in your new outdoor living room.

Outdoor Living Room Accents

You can choose any color you like to accent versatile outdoor furniture such as the pieces found in the Brookstone, so decorate with a colorful hue that shines in the sun to make your own unique style and personality pop. The 2016 St. Jude’s Colorado Springs Dream Home uses various shades of blue for a bold complement against the clean-cut cream. A unique indigo Riviera Ogee Rug is funky on the ground, while the beige Solid Outdoor Pillow matches the Brookstone Sofa to complement the blue Textured Outdoor Pillow.

Next to the sofa, imitate the one-of-a-kind tasteful accessories that adorn the Brookstone Coffee Table in a tray just like Furniture Row’s Profile Tray. A tray is perfect for holding vases and other decorative items to help incorporate your own unique style and balance out the color scheme you have chosen. For decorative artifacts similar ones in the 2016 St. Jude’s Colorado Springs Dream Home, check out Furniture Row’s woven Creeper Vine Ball, beautiful turquoise ceramic Lined Aqua Vase, and glass Seeded Hurricane for a fun mix that looks like it belongs in your outdoor living room.

Whatever your style is, be sure to create an outdoor living room that will be your new relaxation haven! After all, summer only comes once a year!

Soak Up Summer Lakeside Style

Summer is finally here, and for many of us, the warm weather brings activities near the water. Summer brings weekend trips to the beach and nice weather, but if you don’t have time for a vacation, decorating your home with furniture inspired by spending blissful days at lakeside cottages will give you the relaxing atmosphere you’ve always imagined. Being active on a boat is how you want to spend your summer, but don’t forget to take a little time inside to unwind as well. With these beachy, nautical themed picks from Furniture Row, you can learn some of the many ways to make your home look as summery as a lakeside beach house.lakeside-style

When trying to incorporate lakeside style into your home, choosing items that are simple and natural is the best way to go. Reclaimed and distressed wood look lovely paired with furniture with worn finishes as well as pieces made from natural materials such as woven wicker. Clean and effortlessly beautiful furnishings make quite the statement when mixed together to create a unique combination of rustic and relaxed. For a beautifully distressed wooden piece, check out Furniture Row’s Franklin Cabinet (3) that’s made of thick and durable solid kiln-dried pine and makes any living space feel as cozy as a lakeside cottage. The slatted base is convenient for storing items such as beach towels, and the large hanging door simply hides other loose objects. For more refurbished wooden storage, the sea blue painted Tuscan Retreat 2 Basket Stand (8) nicely mixes a light breezy hue with rustic wood and country styled wicker baskets for a weathered lakeside feel.

Although we all love reclaimed wood here and there, not all the pieces of your house have to be distressed! Warm wooden tones enhanced by a glossy finish resemble the beautifully-made structure of canoes and other wooden watercraft, making lovely centerpieces for furniture that gets a lot of use in the home. The Lake House Trestle Table (11) is a great gathering place for dining occasions with its long rectangular top, sturdy legs, and traditional design. The golden-brushed sand finish on the solid birch structure is bright and sunny in a dining room and is perfect for making memories. Your furniture could even look like a boat! The Tuscan Retreat Boat Bookcase (4) is definitely nautical in appearance since it features a one-of-a-kind silhouette of a boat.

Nautical furniture doesn’t just end inside either. Carry the theme of the sea outside with lounging chairs for your patio like Furniture Row’s Brookstone Chaise Lounge (12). Instead of wood, this sun chair uses dark woven wicker to support your body’s natural contour on its simple, plush cream cushion, making it ideal for year-round relaxation.

When you think of nautical textiles, you probably think of anchor patterns or beach cabana stripes in bold red, white, and navy blue, but you can also use other shades and fun patterns for your lakeside inspired room.

For colors, hues that might be found on a sandy shore such as warm tones of beige and even yellow look well paired with the various shades of blues you’d find in the lake ranging anywhere from pale aqua to dark indigo. Bright colors should be used throughout the room, but still sparingly so as not to offset natural shades. For a sandy beige toned piece, the Lakeside 2 Accent Chair (1) is bright but not too bright with its natural-looking plant patterned upholstery. White silhouetted patterns instead of black also look breezier, so choosing an interesting shape with a bold shade of blue will look summery on a couch, rug, or even an accent pillow such as the Chevron Pillow (7), which is iconic yet unique with its white thin chevron print on bright ocean blue fabric.

For a coastal and casual couch, the Bellamy Sofa (5) is nautical with its woven navy blue upholstery that is complemented by two cabana striped light blue and white accent pillows. For the floor, the Riviera Ogee Rug (2) mixes beige and indigo blue to create a striking ogee pattern that your guests are bound to notice and fall in love with.

The best way to make your room look a little beachier is to add items you’d find on the beach or a ship! A ship’s anchor, a telescope, a Captain’s steering wheel, and glass bottles are all great items to have on display in your living space to help give it a lakeside vibe. Objects associated with seafaring can include oars, model ships, stones, and rope that you can use to help decorate empty bookshelves, walls, mantels, or other surface tops. Furniture Row’s Rope Mirror (6) and Washed Ashore Framed Print (9) are ideal for making you feel as though you are drifting off to sea when you hang them on a wall. The Distressed Oars Table Lamp (10) is also a unique way to tie in the lakeside theme since it uses two oars instead of a regular lamp base.

There are many ways to bring lakeside style to your home, so get creative! Say ahoy on land with this fun summer trend that’s sweeping the nation from coast to coast.

Wood: If you want top-quality and long-lasting furniture, solid wood accent tables are both strong and durable to withstand years of use. It’s easy to choose wood since there are so many kinds with different finishes, and you can be assured that you made a classic selection that will always look beautifully made. How do I mix and match them?

So many options for accent tables can be intimidating, but don’t limit yourself to getting only one! Mix and match materials, shapes, and colors for a look that is just the right ounce of originality. Here are some tips for creating a combination that is right for the room in question:

  1. If you’re matching two wooden tables, make sure they match in tone. Using a blend of different woods and finishes will create a natural organic mix, but blending will work best if you mix cool colors and warm colors separately.
  1. When mixing metals, don’t be afraid to choose more than one type of metal finish! Various metals such as gold, brass, and bronze work wonderfully together for a dynamic impact, and unlike wood, warm and cool tones will have a super chic effect. For more on how to mix metals, check out our article about Precious Metals: Mix up the Shine.

Off-White, On-Trend

It’s time to start fresh with a clean slate! Bring peace and tranquility to your home’s design with a shade that will never go out of style—off-white. Sound boring? Color lovers might be a little intimidated by this trend that’s taking off in 2016, but the staff at Furniture Row assures you that off-white is the easy and sophisticated solution to brightening any room in your home. If a room has interesting architectural details, you don’t want to distract your guests with furniture that’s too bold. With off-white, you get a brand new perspective on the shade that’s been inspiring designers for centuries, but you also get to implement pieces that are timeless, versatile, and neutrally chic.

White suggests a clean, open, and breezy space even when your room might not be the largest in size, but with off-white you can also enjoy a warmer version of it. Choosing various shades of white ensures that you are selecting a safe color that will not only go well with any color or pattern, but also look sleek and modern as the years go by. Whether it’s a couch, bed, or even a funky lamp, off-white is on the rise.

Be Environmentally Friendly with Mango

With all the options of wood types when choosing furniture for your home, it might seem nearly impossible to make the right selection. Color, glow, texture, and durability might play an important part in making sure your new dresser withstands the test of time, but what about when it comes to choosing furniture that you know will not only be a favorite in your family room, but also a better choice for helping the environment?

Mango trees are popular for their sweet orange fruit, but they also produce one of the best sustainable furniture materials. By implementing mango wood furniture into your home, you will feel great knowing that the furniture you love is also better for our wonderful planet Earth. Check out these creative and beautifully crafted mango wood pieces from Furniture Row for inspiration on the many uses of mango in the home and learn more about why this tropical tree is so awesome!

Where does mango wood come from?

Mango wood is derived from the mango tree belonging to the genus Mangifera. Produced mainly for its fruit, the mango tree is native to south and southeast Asia, with the highest concentration of trees grown in India. The mango tree itself can live for over 300 years if left undisturbed by nature or man, and can reach up to between 80 and 100 feet tall with a diameter of 3 to 4 feet. Once a tree is twenty years old, it can no longer produce mango fruit and is cut down and replaced with another tree. All cut-down mango trees are then sold to craftsmen who can recycle them into furniture.

Why is mango wood considered a sustainable alternative?

Due to the huge demand for the mango fruit, there has always been a large demand to grow vast amounts of mango trees, but when the trees have to be cut down after reaching maturity, they are used for fuel or are simply left to rot and emit carbon dioxide as the wood decomposes. By harvesting the mango tree to construct furniture, there is a reduced need for lumber-only tree production and eliminates the reason to cut down trees that take longer to grow such as oak, mahogany, and cedar, as well as trees that are similar but rare or endangered such as teak and monkey pod. Choosing mango wood as an alternative ensures that instead of cutting down a healthy tree that’s only used to make furniture, you are recycling an old tree that has already served its fruit-bearing purpose and needs to be used for something else. And that’s not all! In addition to helping the environment, choosing mango wood also supports the local mango farmers who often struggle financially in India and other southeastern Asian countries.

What makes mango wood attractive as a furniture material?

Like most hardwoods, mango wood is very strong, so it makes quality and long-lasting furniture. However, unlike oak and other trees that take a long time period to grow, mango trees produce wood that is durable but easier to manipulate, so it can be used for carving more creative designs. Mango wood also has a wide range of colors from blonde to dark brown, and can even show off a hint of pink. It is one of the hardiest woods in the world, and offers densely packed grains that are surprisingly excellent for staining and waxing. When finished, mango wood creates one of the smoothest and satisfying textures. It is as durable and dense as cherry or ash wood, so you will never have to worry that your bedroom or dining set won’t last! Mango wood is also highly water-resistant due to its tropical climate habitat, so it’s perfect for outdoor furniture as well. Best used with a rustic finish for craftsman designs, you will certainly fall in love with this beautiful, exotic wood that is also an affordable value.

Where is the best place to use mango wood?

In a guest or children’s room, this piece is the ideal combination of functional and ethical. The Montego will add rustic appeal to your home and is perfect for displaying books and other beloved belongings. The same unique design can be used for a homey seat with the Belle Manor Bench (2) that features a double crisscrossed back that stylishly seats two in any gathering place.
